Hello again, astronauts in training! As future astronauts, you might be met with a lot of disbelief at the things you tell people about what you've observed in space. It's a good thing we're all trained to keep a detailed log of everything we do and see. It makes it easier to tell people the true but wild stories of our space expeditions!
Speaking of true and wild stories, Scripture has a lot of those that we can learn from. That's right, it's time to blast off into the Bible!
Let's check out this entry from Acts 16:16–34.
For those of you who remember, the Paul in this story is the same guy who wrote all those letters to different followers of Jesus to give them advice and words of encouragement. In this Bible passage, we can see that he tried his very best to live the way he taught others to live.
So he and his buddy Silas had a run-in with a girl who made money by telling the future. But this "gift" wasn't from God and so Paul commanded the bad spirit to come out of her. So of course, the people she worked for were furious and made a huge commotion so that Paul and Silas could end up in jail.
But even after getting beat up and thrown into prison, Paul and Silas sang hymns and prayed to God.
Why do you think Paul and Silas were able to still sing and pray to God in this situation?
What do you think you would do if you were in their shoes?
Clearly, Paul and Silas couldn't help themselves ... they just had to keep praising God and let people know the good news. This became even more clear when a sudden earthquake made it so that all the prison doors flew open and everyone's chains came loose—but nobody tried to escape. The poor jailer thought he was done for, but instead, he learned about Jesus through Paul and Silas, and he and his whole family believed in God that very night!
Because Paul and Silas did not keep quiet but simply had to share their story—the story about Jesus—they were able to remain joyful during tough times and help a man and his family come to know Jesus!
