Over the past two weeks, Pastor Andrew taught our on third ministry pillar: spiritual family. In Ephesians 2, Paul tells a real church in a real time and place that the gospel didn’t just save them individually, but it made them a household. The Greek word is oikeíos: belonging as members of the same family unit. Not guests, not visitors, not fellow event or seat fillers, but family. And Paul doesn’t leave that as theology. He describes a construction project that God is building in our lives as he’s making us family. Family is where we’re fathered, where we come to know God in ways we never could on our own. It’s where we’re found, given role and responsibility among mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters. And it’s where we’re formed, because church family isn’t the setting of your formation — it’s the means of it. Jesus said I will build my church, not I will build my Christian. May we be built together as a spiritual family into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.
