Halacha lets you grab a snack outside the sukkah, but not a nap. The Vilna Gaon spent one Sukkos in a Lithuanian prison with no sukkah, and held his eyelids open for a week rather than sleep outside one.

Why go that far for a nap? Because sleep is not time off from Hashem. It is the moment you stop planning, fixing and worrying, and hand the world back to Him. Rosh Hashana woke us up. Sukkos lets us rest.

There is plenty to worry about this year. The economy. Hurricanes. Israel and its enemies. Antisemitism. How divided everything has become. And on top of all of it, tomorrow.

Which makes the line we add tonight strange. וּבְכֵן תֵּן פַּחְדְּךָ ה׳ אֱלֹהֵינוּ עַל כָּל מַעֲשֶׂיךָ. We ask for fear. A psychiatrist once asked Rabbi Soloveitchik why a person would pray for more of the thing he is trying to get rid of. The answer was that everyone is already afraid of something, and one fear can uproot all the lesser ones.

Elul read backwards spells lulei. If only. It is the word the brothers use when they plead with Yaakov, כִּי לוּלֵא הִתְמַהְמָהְנוּ, and Rashi says it is the word for the anguish of all those days. It is also the word in the psalm we have said all month, לוּלֵא הֶאֱמַנְתִּי לִרְאוֹת בְּטוּב ה׳ בְּאֶרֶץ חַיִּים. One lulei traded for the other.

And what is being asked of us was never out of reach. כִּי קָרוֹב אֵלֶיךָ הַדָּבָר מְאֹד בְּפִיךָ וּבִלְבָבְךָ לַעֲשֹׂתוֹ.

The courtroom is not what people picture. The judge is our Father. אָבִינוּ מַלְכֵּנוּ. Which is why the day of judgment is met with good clothing and a set table. אַל תֵּעָצֵבוּ כִּי חֶדְוַת ה׳ הִיא מָעֻזְּכֶם.

We have what it takes to deal with whatever comes our way.

People used to think the brain was set. You are what you are and that is that. It turns out that isn't quite true. The brain keeps changing your whole life, and your habits and choices slowly rewire it. Even at a hundred.

That is close to what Rosh Hashana is saying. It is not the day the world was made. It is the sixth day, the day people were made. So we don't say the world was created today. We say היום הרת עולם. Your new world is being made today.

Maybe that is why we are not judged for the past. We can't go back and change it anyway. We are judged for right now, for who we are today.

There is a part of the brain that runs willpower, and it seems to grow every time you do something you didn't want to do. It works one day at a time. Miss a few days and it shrinks back.

There are hacks in technology. There don't seem to be any in life. Sometimes the thing you don't want to do is the thing that changes you.
