Join us tonight for Ash Wednesday worship at 6:00 pm as we reflect on our mortality to better celebrate the resurrection, and on our sins to better rejoice in our justification.

Given the current snowstorm and its impact on the roads, we will not gather in person for worship or Bible study this Sunday. Since gathering for worship is an important part of the Christian life, the decision isn't made lightly. Nevertheless, travel may be difficult, dangerous, or impossible, so we will forego our normal gathering this Sunday. We look forward to seeing everyone back in person next Sunday!

To know who you are, first know who Christ is.

From January 6th until Ash Wednesday, the Church is in the season of Epiphany, a word which comes from Greek, meaning "appearance" or "revealing." Between Christmas and Lent, we see how Christ is revealed as the Son of God, our Savior. Since the Son of God came hidden in human flesh, such revelation is required for us. Near the beginning of the season, we hear the Father's voice booming from heaven, "This is my Son!" Near its end, on Transfiguration, we hear the same words, "This is my Son!"

This Sunday, we will celebrate the Baptism of Our Lord, where Christ stands among sinners and in their place at the Jordan, where he is baptized not for his own sake, but for ours, to "fulfill all righteousness." There we see our substitute, the one with whom, God is well-pleased.

We often think the most important and relevant answers are those that are about us; Epiphany offers us better answers. Since Christ is our substitute, what is true of him is true of us. Since the Father is well-pleased with him, he is also well-pleased with us. Since he came as a Savior for all people, we can rest in the promise of free and full salvation. Since he came to bright light and life to the world, we need not look inside ourselves for answers; we need only look to him.

Five hundred years ago today, a monk named Martin Luther rediscovered a truth that changed the world. What began with the sound of hammer and nail on a church door in Wittenberg was not just an act of protest. It was the recovery of the gospel itself.

The Reformation wasn’t just for theologians or historians. As Brian Thomas writes in today’s piece, “The Reformation is for the rest of us—ordinary people who are just trying to survive Monday mornings, guilt that won’t let go, and the sneaking suspicion that God might be more disappointed than proud of us.”

Luther’s discovery was simple but life-changing: righteousness isn’t something we earn. It’s something God gives to us freely, fully, and forever on account of Christ alone.
