Greetings of peace as summer settles in to our beautiful region!
This Sunday our scriptures tell of the selection of the disciples and their sending out by Jesus to preach and heal. The sermon will make quick reference to a poem by June Jordan (1936-2002) which resonates beautifully with Christ’s affirmation of the disciples’ abilities to do the challenging but saving work that he puts before them. Here, for your reflection, is the conclusion of Jordan’s poem, “Poem for South African Women”:

And who will join this standing up
and the ones who stood without sweet company
will sing and sing
back into the mountains and
if necessary
even under the sea
we are the ones we have been waiting for.

I look forward to worshiping together on Sunday!
Faithfully,
Alison

Dear friends: I hope that you can participate in Sunday's worship, in whatever place, format and time works for you! We'll reflect together on some wonderful verses from the Gospel According to Matthew: Christ's call to a tax collector, his refusal to abide by old rules that aren't working anymore, and his healings of people who are "beyond" all help. In all of it we are asked to consider how God and Christ are doing a new thing among even us, even now. Are there ways that you see new movements of the Spirit happening in your own lives? Or newness that is being placed before you but that you have not yet acted upon?
May blessings shower upon you with the weekend's rain, Alison

Greetings of peace to you on this Trinity Sunday weekend! Many pastors find the Trinity a hard subject to preach on because it can be so challenging simply to define. Years ago I read a short piece by the Rev. Barbara Brown Taylor about this. On the morning of Trinity Sunday her colleague left a Three Musketeers candy bar on her windshield, and a copy of the men's motto, "All for one, and one for all!" Indeed, this is one particularly accessible way to describe the Trinity to contemporary churchgoers! I won't be taking this homiletical approach tomorrow, but rather we'll reflect on the Trinity as relationship, as community, as a circular entity that "Dances Around" one another and all creation. I hope to see you in the pews or online!
Faithfully,
Alison

This Sunday...Would you go to a friend’s house for dinner unannounced and uninvited? I doubt it. Would you continue to engage in conversations with that friend if, every time you did, they ranted, loudly castigating you, demeaning everything you believe in, and “putting you down” for believing in such bunk? I doubt that too.

Join us tomorrow morning as we see how Peter, the apostle, advises us to interact with people, and then look at Paul doing just what Peter advises.

See you tomorrow!
Hunt

This Sunday...The last week of Jesus' life was an emotional roller coaster both for Him and for His followers. The week starts with His triumphal entry into Jerusalem and progresses to His cleansing of the temple, to the warmth and solemnity of the Passover meal ("The Last Supper") to the loneliness of His solitary prayer time in the Garden of Gethsemane, to His crushing betrayal by Judas and subsequent arrest, to His trial in the kangaroo court, to the horrific tragedy of His crucifixion, to His entombment in the cave, and ultimately to His amazing and quietly glorious resurrection. Tomorrow's service, which we briefly call Palm Sunday, is more formally referred to as Palm/Passion Sunday or in some denominations, as Palm Sunday of the Passion of Christ. In it we will transition from the celebration of Jesus being lauded by the crowds as He rides into Jerusalem to the injustice of the kangaroo court that convicts Him. Join us as we follow this transition and try to understand how the people could turn on Him so abruptly.

Blessings,
Hunt
