Blue Ash Church

Blue Ash Church Creating community for all who are curious about Jesus or a life-long follower. No matter where you are in your faith journey, you are welcome! (Joel 2:25).

Our 4 guiding values:

Relationships - The people in your life shape your life (Proverbs 13:20). Relevance - We want to be both culturally and bibilically relevant. If we are just culturally relevant it's meaningless (2 Timothy 3:16). Replication - We want to be the church, not do church. So we take the words of Jesus serious when He said "go make disciples" (Matthew 28:19). Restoration - You can'

t read the bible without learning about the restoring heart of God. He wants to restore you, your family, our community and the world.

Day 5 Mission Team Blog (Friday)

As I reflect on our final day of this mission trip, I can’t help but think back to the very first day. Just ten minutes after walking through the front door of our house, I felt challenged and honestly wanted to go home. Anxiety, fear, insecurity, and worries that I didn’t belong weighed heavily on me. I questioned whether there was a place for me here and whether I was truly meant to be part of what God was doing.

But God had other plans.

As the week unfolded, He slowly chipped away at those fears and showed me that there was a place for me. Not only for me, but for every person on our team. It was incredible to watch each of us find our place, build relationships, and step into the purpose God had for us throughout the week.

Today, we spent some time together at the beach, soaking in the beauty of God’s creation and enjoying fellowship with one another. We celebrated Kait’s birthday back at the house and then headed to the community center for our final day. We completed our projects, joined the staff in afternoon prayer, and left our handprints on the wall which was a reminder that while we came to serve, this place has left a mark on us as well.

But, the most powerful moment of the day wasn’t on the beach or at the community center. It happened back at the house on our final night together.

As we finished our evening debrief, the Holy Spirit stirred something in Hy’s heart. He announced that he wanted to be baptized. The moment those words left his mouth, the entire house erupted with joy. The excitement was so loud it felt like the Bengals had just won the Super Bowl. Instantly, praise filled the room as everyone made their way to the pool.

And then something happened that I will never forget even if I tried. A group of young people, gathered around their friend, laid hands on him, prayed over him, and celebrated as he publicly declared his faith in Jesus. We witnessed a life being surrendered to Christ and a believer taking the next step in obedience.

As I stood there worshiping, I found myself overwhelmed with gratitude. I told God how much I loved Him. I thanked Him for allowing me to be part of this moment and for bringing me into a community where I felt seen, loved, and welcomed. The same girl who wanted to go home on day one was now standing among brothers and sisters in Christ, celebrating what only God could do.

This trip has reminded me that God often meets us on the other side of our fears. He takes our insecurities and turns them into opportunities to trust Him. He takes strangers and makes them family. And when we surrender our plans and expectations, He shows us that His plans are always greater.

Day 4 Mission Team Blog (Thursday):

Coming into this week, I really had no clear picture of my “why” on the trip this year. Over and over again throughout our week, I keep getting nudged that I’m not in control of my own outcomes. And I couldn’t help but be expectant to feel overwhelmed in our time here. Not by things of the world, but simply by the presence of God.

This morning as we arrived at Tres Reyes, David was covered in ants, Kaitlyn had sunscreen in her eyes, and it was storming intensely. I knew Satan was trying to put a halt on the work we were going to do today. Typically, full of angst during bad weather, I felt nothing but peace and calmness as we listened to the Social Workers from the community center speak. I looked into the community center to recognize kids dancing freely to some music amidst the storm. The only thing I could do was smile. Then we went on to pray for families of their program in their own houses.

Later in the morning, we got to hear from the Principal of the school at Tres Reyes talk about their education program. Earlier in the week, I was overwhelmed by emotions hearing how they deal with children who handle their trauma differently and how we back home have similarly dealt well with that. Just the collective unity I felt as a worldwide Church. I continued to feel great passion for the way they care for the students in their program, and hearing their blessings of growth as a school. I asked how they’d handle growth in the number of students with the lack of space in their current classrooms. The Principal was joyful in the fact that God had already been revealing future opportunities in their backyard that would allow them to continue extending their reach.

By lunch time, I had already been rushed by so much joy, that couldn’t have been anything but God’s glory. The afternoon was spent watching the opener to the World Cup, Mexico vs. South Africa. We got to engage actively with the whole community. Short and sweet, I met a little boy who sat with me most of the game, and later on claimed he wanted to be my best friend. During the whole interaction, he copied me, celebrated with me, and shared the things he enjoyed. I mean it when I say, my whole day was spent smiling, more than I’ve ever smiled in a day in my life. Full of lots of gratitude after today, and so much more happened.

Day 3 Mission Blog (Wednesday)

We’re halfway through our mission and as we move into the rest of this trip, I just want acknowledge how meaningful this experience has already been to me, coming here for my first time, not knowing what to expect, and then being so warmly included in a team that includes people who have come together in previous years. Seeing how close this group has become, it’s no surprise to see how everyone shows up for one another and how vulnerable we can be with each other, sharing many tears over this week. It all reflects just how strong and beautiful our community is back home, since this is an extension of that community. Even though our schedule often feels busy and rushed, we are still able to find so much stillness in the moments we do have.

Today, we got to make piñatas from scratch. We learned from a mother who has built a small business from this work, and we had the honor of being her very first class she has taught how to do it. Our team really showed up in making that a safe, encouraging space for her. There was so much laughter and so many special moments in that art room. We got to witness her daughter watch and help her mom step “into the yellow” (out of her comfort zone) and be so brave in front of complete strangers. We were able to pour into her by asking for her help as we struggled, lift her up through encouraging her, and simply be in the presence of Jesus together. It felt like we created something truly meaningful for both of them.

Later, we got to be the hands and feet of Jesus in another way. We were supposed to paint outside, but we had to pivot and move indoors instead. It became so much more than just painting walls & not a single person held back. If someone had empty hands, they were looking for more to do. Everyone was fully present and focused on serving.

Day 2 Mission Trip Blog (Tuesday):

After going on the mission trip last year I had very few new expectations, but I couldn’t have been more wrong. The day started off fairly normal we woke up, had breakfast and then loaded up in vehicles to head to Tres Reyes. Once we arrived, we met staff and toured the facility and learned about the programs they have to empower the children as well as the adults. The stories we were told were absolutely heartbreaking. What these children have had to endure was unfathomable to me.
We then went on a guided tour of the 3 zones of the city which I didn’t get to experience last year. I got a far more in depth look at the poverty in the area that I was not aware of. From the archaic electrical boxes and electrical lines wrapped around trees for support instead of telephone poles to the stores with bars on the doors for security.

After the tour of the city, we went back to Tres Reyes and were introduced to the children through games that required interaction from all. I sensed very little reluctance from any of the children. There was no question that they were all so happy we were there. The smiles and laughter seemed endless.

Then we had some free time to play soccer, basketball and volleyball with the children and some of the staff where the smiles and laughter continued. While I was playing basketball with a young boy, I happened to look out at the soccer field and saw Paige running and laughing which absolutely brought my level of happiness to a new level since last year she was dealing with a dislocated knee cap. At that moment I realized it wasn’t just for the children in Mexico. Everyone in our group was growing and benefiting from this experience as well. It was truly an amazing day!

Day 1 Mission Trip Blog (Monday):

When people say yes to going on a Missions Trip, there are always a million questions and very little idea of what to expect. Even 5 months of meetings, planning, and serving together can never quite capture the whole picture. So as we all rolled out of bed this morning way earlier than we wanted to, we all had different pictures of what we would be walking into, but none of them really expecting to wait in line for over an hour just to check in! But even though we had faced many challenges over the last few months, this wasn’t the last struggle we would see before we hit the ground.

As we boarded the flight from Charlotte to Cancun, we were grateful that we had had no trouble with the connections, all had time to catch a quick bite, and had some downtime to rest. We couldn’t wait to get there! All in all the flight went pretty quickly and quiet, other than some bumpy spots of turbulence. But as they made the announcement that we were beginning to land, the turbulence started getting much more intense, and soon they announced that they weren’t going to be able to land right away, and we began circling the airport. They announced that the landing crew was checking on the safety of a couple of things, so we would be delayed even more…more and more circling. Soon after, the woman in the row in front of us said that Cancun had just had a 4.6 magnitude earthquake, which was why they checking the safety.

Harmless enough, since we weren’t on the ground, but the constant circling had created motion sickness in some of us, and had hyped up anxieties in others. We weren’t sure how long the situation would last, or even if it would effect how things progressed. As the feelings of sickness intensified, I felt compelled to pray…for the safety of those on the ground, for the overwhelming feelings team members were having, and the Spirit would calm all our tummies, despite the internal conflict of not wanting to “bother” others who weren’t a part of our team. While it would have been great to say that it resolved quickly and like a perfect fairy tale, it didn’t. Sure, we eventually landed, but there were shaken nerves and sickness that we would have preferred not to have to deal with.

But finally, we were on the ground, and able to step into what God has for us on this trip. Thankfully, the rest of the evening was mostly uneventful, and we rounded out with our debriefing, to talk through the perspectives of each of our days, beginning the journey into the emotions and thoughts that God has placed on our hearts during that time. With other groups I have been a part of, the first night is often defined by exhaustion and little left in the tank for sharing, thinking, and supporting each other. But this small but mighty group of 13 men and women had every reason to feel the same way. And yet we all shared with words, tears, and tissues, the fears that we had been holding on our hearts, and the expectations that we hold with uncertainty. Each of us has shown up vulnerable, ready, and waiting for what this week will hold!
