We invite you to join us this Sunday morning to support Aly Ruth Fry, our Summer Ministry Intern from Duke Divinity School, as she delivers her first sermon at Rumple. We take the responsibility to be a teaching church seriously as we answer God’s call to nurture young people who feel called to the ministry. We am excited to hear how the Spirit has moved in her this week as Aly continues our summer sermon series, “The Bible Tells Me So: The New Testament.” She will preach from Matthew 9:9-13, 18-26, helping us learn more not only about this text but also about the Gospel of Matthew, the first gospel.

Last weekend 9 of our youth and 3 adult chaperons traveled for their annual beach trip. They had a long weekend filled with fellowship, service, worship and of course fun. It wouldn’t be the annual beach trip without beach Olympics.

This Sunday, we will begin our summer-long sermon series, “The Bible Tells Me So: The New Testament.” If you were at Rumple in summer 2025, you know we attempted to preach through the entire Old Testament. This summer, we will attempt to do the same with the New Testament. We hope you will join us this Sunday, as Kathy will offer an introduction to our sermon series. We’ll explore how we read Scripture as Presbyterians, how we interpret Scripture, and why an overview of the whole Bible is helpful for all of us in becoming more familiar with Scripture, its themes, and how it presents God’s salvation history.

Our Scriptures for Sunday are Psalm 8 and Matthew 28:16-20. The latter text contains some well-known words of Jesus referred to as “The Great Commission.” In that passage, Jesus commissions his first disciples to go out to share the Good News. As we dig into the New Testament this summer, I hope that we will all feel like better-equipped disciples who are able to share the Good News of God’s love through our words and actions.

At 9:30 we will have Rev. Dr. Margaret Aymer Oget, who will join us from Austin Seminary via Zoom to discuss the new proposed confession.

Sunday is also the final Sunday of May, so we will receive the Pennies for Hunger offering in addition to our regular morning offerings.

Please welcome our Summer Duke Divinity Intern:
Aly Ruth Fry

Hello! My name is Aly Ruth Fry! I am currently finishing up my first year of my Master of Divinity at Duke Divinity School. Before Duke I got my BA From Greenville University in southern IL in May of 2025. At Greenville I majored in Theology: Biblical Studies and had minors in Jewish-Christian Studies and Ministry. During my time at Greenville I had some wonderful mentors who provided me with amazing opportunities, including a summer church internship in 2024 and for 3 years I had the privilege of being the Theology Department Teaching/Administrative Assistant. I am a member at a small liturgical Free Methodist Church in Greenville, IL and I am in the first stage towards ordination in the FMC (LMC or Local Ministerial Candidate). In my free time I love exploring trails/rivers and painting (mostly iconography). Though I am an Illinois native, I have familial and personal connections both to Duke Divinity and Western North Carolina so I am so excited to be with y’all this summer! Peace of Christ to you all!

Memorial Day weekend is unofficial start of summer, but this year it it is also Pentecost Sunday. Pentecost is the day we celebrate the birthday of the church, the day the Holy Spirit descended upon some of the first disciples of Jesus, empowering them to go forth to share the Good News of God’s saving grace in Jesus Christ.

We will read both the Pentecost story from Acts 2 and a passage from 1 Corinthians 12 which celebrates the variety of Spirit given gifts that we find in the Body of Christ. As Presbyterians, we celebrate that God’s Spirit does fill each of us, in the Body of Christ, with different gifts to be used for the building up of the Body and the kingdom of God. We’ll explore those gifts together on Sunday and we hope you will consider what you believe your spiritual gifts are, and how you are invited to share them within and beyond the Body of Christ, the church.

❤️🧡💛🔥In celebraton of the church’s birthday please wear red, orange, or yellow so that we can have a sanctuary filled with the colors of Pentecost.

This will weekend will also be then start of our two service season. Services will be begin at 8:45 a.m. and 11:00 a.m., through October this year. Most of our wonderful choral scholars are with us all summer, so there will be special music each Sunday at the early service too!
