You are invited to spend some time in Lectio Divina with Philippians 1:9-11, read from the Common English Bible (included below) for Sunday, June 14. When you are ready, carve out some time in a quiet place free of distractions and feast on God’s Word.

1. READING (LECTIO): In this first step, slowly read through your selected passage of Scripture. Take your time. Make sure you’re absorbing the words in front of you. Is there a word or phrase or verse that surfaces for you as you read? Take note of it.

2. REFLECTING (MEDITATIO): After your first read through the passage, read it again with the intent of reflecting. This second time through, let the words interact with your thoughts, feelings, and your life circumstances—past, present, and future. The image used in antiquity to describe this step is that of the cow chewing its cud. Read. Reflect. And then, when you’re ready, move to the third step.

3. RESPONDING (ORATIO): The third time of reading through the passage is for response. You might be moved to praise, adoration, or giving thanks. You might respond to pray for someone using the Scripture at hand. Is there a word or phrase that the Spirit brought to your attention on your first read-through? Consider responding to it.

4. RESTING (CONTEMPLATIO): The fourth step in Lectio Divina may be the hardest for modern people. As you read through this passage once more, focus on resting in God’s presence. You don’t need to do anything. Just BE. The stillness can be uncomfortable for some, and you might be tempted to cut your time short. But with practice, this step becomes easier and even more enriching.

PHILIPPIANS 1:9-11, CEB

(9)This is my prayer: that your love might become even more and more rich with knowledge and all kinds of insight. (10)I pray this so that you will be able to decide what really matters and so you will be sincere and blameless on the day of Christ. (11)I pray that you will then be filled with the fruit of righteousness, which comes from Jesus Christ, in order to give glory and praise to God.

We have a loving group of both ladies and gentlemen of ALL ages for whom hospitality is a true gift. Whether it be a church covered-dish, a meal for a family after a funeral, food taken to someone who is sick or just home from the hospital, meals for the Day Center, or just a little extra of a dish someone made that they want to share, they bless so many with heart-made dishes to heal the hungry soul. I jokingly told someone that if you mention you have a splinter, one of these bearers of Jesus’ love will show up on your doorstep with a meal, so when I saw this, I could not help but think of how they are Jesus as they walk through the pots and pans here at Wheeler. Here’s a big chef’s kiss to you all! — Ginger

(6)And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him. (7)Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.

Proverbs 4:4-9, NLT

(4)My father taught me, “Take my words to heart. Follow my commands, and you will live. (5)Get wisdom; develop good judgment. Don’t forget my words or turn away from them. (6)Don’t turn your back on wisdom, for she will protect you. Love her, and she will guard you. (7)Getting wisdom is the wisest thing you can do! And whatever else you do, develop good judgment. (8)If you prize wisdom, she will make you great. Embrace her, and she will honor you. (9)She will place a lovely wreath on your head; she will present you with a beautiful crown.”
