First Christian Church was organized in 1837 by William T. Major, a prominent community leader in Bloomington. The congregation chose to affiliate with the Disciples of Christ movement, which gave it the freedom to take a stand against slavery. Today we are one of over 3,000 congregations in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), a denomination which remains committed to Christian unity and sharing the limitless love of God.

First Christian Church has many ministry partners in our community and throughout the world. Regional Alternative School - RAS is located just one block from our church campus, and provides educational services for at-risk students who were not experiencing success in the traditional day school program, giving them the opportunity to continue their education.

First Christian Church provides support to RAS in a number of ways; and RAS students and faculty help out regularly at our church's Helping Shelf.

Following recent severe weather that has impacted communities across the region, the American Red Cross has the following shelter available to serve residents in need:

—Bethel Community Resource Center, 1250 Portland Ave, Chicago Heights, IL

Anyone impacted by the severe weather is welcome to come to the shelter for:

— A safe place to stay
— Meals and snacks
— Charging stations
— Access to information, Red Cross assistance and community resources

Our volunteers are there to provide comfort, care and support during this difficult time.

A few weeks ago we hosted an overnight lock-in that was attended by 19 youth. They enjoyed a cookout and outdoor games before moving indoors for more games, activities, and devotion time. In the morning, despite being sleep-deprived, they were already looking forward to next time.
