Stump the Pastor 4: What was Jesus like as a child?

But Scripture does tell us enough to say some very important things. First, Jesus was one hundred percent human. That means Jesus did not merely appear to be human. He was not pretending. He was not God wearing a human costume. He took on our flesh and truly entered into our life. John says, “And

Stump the Pastor 3: When do we actually go to Heaven?

We hear Jesus say to the thief on the cross, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise” (Luke 23:43). That sounds immediate. Today. Paradise. With Jesus. Then we hear Paul say, “Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in...

Stump the Pastor: How do you respond when someone takes the Bible out of context?

For a Christian, few things are more frustrating than when people misquote Scripture or use a verse out of context to make a point.

Sometimes, though, that misunderstanding becomes a beautiful opportunity. Someone may honestly be wrestling with a passage, and a little context opens the door to deeper faith.

For example, Jesus says, "If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother... he cannot be my disciple" (Luke 14:26). At first, that sounds harsh. Why would Jesus tell us to hate anyone?

But in Scripture, "love" and "hate" can sometimes describe priority. God says, "Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated" (Romans 9:13; Malachi 1:2-3). That does not mean God had no care for Esau. It means God chose Jacob's line for the promised Messiah.

So in Luke 14, Jesus is not commanding sinful hatred toward family. He is teaching us about priority. The context is the cost of discipleship. Christ comes first. Your soul matters. Eternal life matters. Even family, comfort, and life itself must not become more important than Jesus.

That kind of clarification can lead to wonderful conversations.

But sometimes, people are not asking in good faith. They have their "gotcha" verse. They are not interested in understanding Scripture. They are using it to attack Christians or keep Jesus at arm's length.

In those moments, be patient. Pray. Ask the Holy Spirit to soften hearts. Speak when there is an opening. And do not let Satan's twisting of God's Word shake your confidence in the faith.

And when the time comes, speak the truth in love.

There are too many people trapped in the jail cell of sin for Christians to sit quietly with the key in our hands.

Point to Jesus. Plant the seed. Trust the Lord to give the growth.

"I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth."
-1 Corinthians 3:6

Now it is time to pour into that mission and help it take shape.

Pastor's Ponderings - Do You Wear Clothes in Heaven?

We often think of heaven as the restoration of Eden. Before the Fall, Adam and Eve “were both naked and were not ashamed” (Genesis 2:25). There was no shame, no lust, no fear, and no danger of being used or harmed by one another.

But after sin entered the world, shame entered with it. Adam and Eve hid from God and covered themselves with fig leaves. Then God Himself clothed them (Genesis 3:21). From the beginning, sinners could not properly cover their own shame. God had to cover them.

That theme runs all through Scripture.

David prays, “Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow” (Psalm 51:7). Isaiah says, “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow” (Isaiah 1:18). Paul writes, “For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ” (Galatians 3:27).

And in Revelation, John sees “a great multitude that no one could number… standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes” (Revelation 7:9).

So do we wear clothes in heaven?

The honest answer is: I do not know for certain. The Bible does not answer the question exactly the way we ask it. But I would lean toward yes, because John’s Revelation shows the saints clothed in white, and because clothing is used so often in Scripture as a picture of salvation.

But perhaps we don't know, because that isn't what matters most. Even Augustine focused less on whether we will need literal clothing and more on the glory of the resurrected body: healed, whole, perfected, and free from shame.

That is the greater promise.

Whether literal or symbolic, the saints are covered. They are washed clean. They are clothed in white. They stand before God not in shame, but in joy.

And that covering does not come from us.

It comes from Christ.
