We had a fabulous delegation from our church at the Indiana United Methodist Annual Conference at St.
Luke's UMC in Indy this week.
They learned about Fresh Expressions in ministry, experienced powerful music and preaching, connected with colleagues, prayed for our churches, and engaged in the business of the
conference. We're thankful for their service!

We celebrated the Festival of God's Creation earlier this month with our Common Ground service. We learned about taking policy action through Grace O'Neil with Faith in Place. We enjoyed a potato bar from Pastor Donna. And then we spent the afternoon in our church vegetable garden and landscaping, beautifying for the season ahead. Thanks to Ellyn and Alexis Pruitt, Gail Merrill, Marilyn Behrman, and Cara Whitley for their leadership!

In the wind-blown scene of Pentecost, tongues of fire rest upon the disciples. They are filled with the Holy Spirit and begin to speak in other languages (and understand each other!) as the Spirit gives them ability. In a culture that fears difference and stokes division, Pentecost offers us a different way where the Spirit affirms our differences and draws us together as one community. We’ll explore that miracle of communication and communion, as Jesus stretches us into relationships with one another, with people who are the same and different, as we struggle to understand God and one another.

BSWERS -- The Be More Impactful Award, Volunteer Of The Year 2026

The City of Bloomington Volunteer Network, which is a service of the City of Bloomington that connects residents with local nonprofit and community service opportunities, hosted the 2026 Be More Awards on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater.

For their work to shelter unhoused individuals during severe weather events, Bloomington Severe Winter Emergency Shelter Volunteers were the recipients of the Be More Impactful Award, which honors the volunteer or volunteer group of the year.

Each Be More Award recipient will receive a $1,000 cash award.

We want to appreciate the collaborating Churches that makes BSWERS possible -- First Christian Church, First Presbyterian Church and indeed First United Methodist Church.

We recognize the Leadership of BSWERS led by Pastors of the three churches and coordinated by Pastor Annette Hill Briggs, First Baptist, Pastor Dan Caldwell, Sacred Heart, and our own liaison Fran Klinger. We appreciate Pastor Joseph Obwanda in his leadership of social justice and Josh Griesemer as a staff and volunteer.

Finally, your generous gifts, prayers and support make these ministries possible. Thank you!

Join us this Sunday at 9:30am or 11:45am for a worship service with music, scripture, and Pastor Joseph’s sermon.

Spirit-filled living is the believer's daily response to Jesus's promise of the Holy Spirit, who indwells, guides, and
empowers us to live in love, peace, holiness, and unity rather than by the flesh. From the Gospel and Epistle readings, we are invited this Eastertide to grow deeper in the fruit of the Spirit and to let Christ's life shape our witness today.

We are hiring a new Director of Children's Ministries at our church.

The director of children’s ministries will:

• Lead a compassionate, Christ-centered children’s ministry (birth–6th grade) in a progressive, medium-sized Reconciling UMC in a university town with diverse families, including East African refugees and LGBTQIA+.

• Collaborate with staff/volunteers to nurture faith formation, create safe spaces, equip parents, and foster intergenerational discipleship.

• Advance FUMCB’s mission of making disciples of Christ through justice, outreach, and radical hospitality for all backgrounds.

On Sunday, April 19 we launched AFRIKA 101 here at First United Methodist Church, Bloomington. This is an expression of our commitment to foster cross-cultural understanding and engagement with African cultures within our congregation and the wider Bloomington community.

Through these quarterly forums, we will explore the richness of African lived experiences through language, food, music, worship, storytelling, and social practices.

We are grateful to the Indiana United Methodist Church, represented by our guest preacher and the launch's keynote speaker, Rev. Dr. Jane Lang’at, Assistant Director of Diversity and Belongingness in the Conference.

We also celebrate our congregation for the strong turnout and extend special thanks to members of the African and East African communities, as well as partners from Indiana University’s African Studies Program, for their presence and support.

AFRIKA 101 which truly affirms the value of all human cultures as God’s design for deeper spiritual connection in diversity and belongingness through shared learning and community. Excited for more? Save the date for Sunday, June 28 with Africa Worship in both services!
