Leading a Community in the Wilderness picks up right where Exodus 15 leaves off: after the Red Sea, Pharaoh’s defeat, and Miriam’s joyful dance of deliverance. But once they step into the wilderness, Israel’s song of praise quickly turns into grumbling (Exodus 16:2–3). Today, we’ll look at how Moses and Aaron lead this community through that transition. Through Moses’ prophetic guidance and pastoral care, and Aaron’s priestly role in gathering the people for worship and preserving God’s testimony, they help a liberated yet anxious people move from celebration to formation, from complaint to trust, and from slavery to Sabbath rest.

Earlier this month, the United Women in Faith Soul Care Retreat was a chance to get away from our busy lives for a day and nurture our souls. We had some relaxing activities including pastries and coffee on arrival, restorative yoga, making zentangles and a catered lunch as well as catching up on three of our favorite local charities, doing hands-on service project, and closing with communion.

It has been incredibly moving to see the wealth of organizing efforts across Indiana this week - over 60 communities across the state are hosting vigils, calling upon Governor Braun to end ICE detentions at Miami County Correctional Facility: https://indianacitizen.org/weekend-protest-events-planned-across-indiana-to-call-for-end-to-ice-detention/.

Tomorrow (Friday, August 28), Exodus will be onsite at the vigil being held here in Bloomington on the southeast corner of the Monroe County Courthouse. The vigil will begin at 8:50 p.m.

We'll celebrate Rainbow Worship on this PrideFest weekend, giving thanks for a welcoming church for all of God's children. We hope you'll join us for our speaker at 11:45am and lunch at 12:45pm.

When the Hebrew people of God were trapped under the brutal oppression of slavery in Pharaoh's Egypt, God made a way for them under Moses' reluctant leadership. God can make a way in our lives, whether we're Hebrew or Egyptian. But that new way involves a new world order. As the people of God at First UMC, are we ready for God's new world order, especially as it applies to people who are oppressed in our community today?
