Hey, its Pastor Kyrmen here! We’ve been promoting the Upper Room on our page; it debuts this Sunday at 5:00 p.m.! I want to tell you more about what it is and why we’re starting this ministry!
WHAT WILL THE UPPER ROOM BE LIKE?
On Sunday evenings, participants will enter the Great Hall where they will see a Communion Table with Bread and Cup waiting, round tables and chairs for seating worshipers, and vibrant decor featuring Christian symbols. As participants arrive, our song leader will provide music from the keyboard as well as vocals. Worship will begin as we sing together.
At their tables, worshipers will find coloring pages for children as well as adults, paper and pens for doodling, and fidget toys for those who are not comfortable being still. Bringing a craft project or other quiet activity is welcome, as is bringing along a beverage or a snack. Tables will also hold “Gratitude Cards” where participants will be invited into a time of intention each week as we consider God’s activity in our lives and how we will respond.
Everything about The Upper Room is intended to feel comfortable and informal. Music will be plentiful and will be drawn from a variety of genres, including contemporary Christian, popular secular music, and hymns. Song lyrics and other written materials will be shared on a projection screen. Most weeks, I will preach an abridged version of Sunday morning’s sermon, but other weeks, participants will engage with the scripture in other ways: we might have a round-table discussion, work on an art project, visit multiple worship stations, or do an on-site mission project. Every week, the Upper Room will include a celebration of the Lord’s Supper as we share Bread and Cup, those cherished reminders of Christ’s love.
WHO IS THE UPPER ROOM FOR?
If you already love the worship service we have on Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m., then the Upper Room was not designed for you. You are invited and encouraged to come check it out, of course - and you may find you want to come back! But the Upper Room is really intended for those who do not connect to our traditional style of Sunday morning worship.
The purpose of the Upper Room is to offer an opportunity to experience FCC’s progressive, inclusive theology in a different package. If a traditional worship service was a place where you experienced rejection, condemnation, or hurt in the past, the Upper Room is for you. If traditional church music is not your thing, the Upper Room is for you. If you need or prefer to sleep in on Sunday mornings, the Upper Room is for you. If you're looking for an opportunity to make community in a comfortable, informal setting, the Upper Room is for you!
The Upper Room is a space where the inclusive love of Christ will be shared with everyone who shows up seeking it - really, we do mean everyone! The best way to find out what the Upper Room is all about is to give it a try! I hope to see you this Sunday - or ANY Sunday - at 5:00 p.m. as we worship in the Upper Room!
