Unitarian Universalist Church of Bloomington-Normal

Unitarian Universalist Church of Bloomington-Normal Enriched by our connections, we embrace the free exploration of spiritual, ethical, and religious truths. Cook, David Felmley, Adlai Stevenson II, H.H.

Moved by compassion and the fullness of human experience, we work for a just and peaceful world. We welcome and celebrate the diversity of human experience that make up the human family, including religious background, cultural and racial identities and differences in ability, sexual orientation, and gender identity. The Unitarian Universalist Church of Bloomington-Normal was organized in 1859. Tw

o state governors, Joseph Fifer and Adlai Stevenson, and the state's first woman senator, Florence Fifer Bohrer, were church members. Seven buildings on the Illinois State University campus have been named for people from this congregation: Jesse Fell, Thomas Metcalf, John W. Schroeder, and Jennie Whitten. Unitarian Universalists have no creed, for we believe that religion is the way we think of life and the way we use what we think in our daily lives. Religion guides us to decide which things are of real worth to us as individuals and to society as a whole. Our beliefs help us live in such a way as to demonstrate that caring about others, yet leaving them free to differ with us, is essential in our relationships with one another. Worship is the way we recommit ourselves to our personal religious values and beliefs in a shared experience. Worship is the center of our community life and we find that our theological differences enhance our worshiping together. The Unitarian Universalist Church in Bloomington is affiliated with the Unitarian Universalist Association (uua.org), but we are financed and governed entirely by our members. With trans acceptance going down throughout our country, this was suggested as a way to "stop letting haters define us", for interested and curious people to have an opportunity to hear intros and ask questions of trans people, and for people to learn that "aside from the one big thing of outward appearance, we’re just like anyone else."

Green Burial
Sunday, August 23, 11:30-1:30.
Our guest speaker is a death doula working with a green cemetery in Illinois.

Memorial Day invites many kinds of remembrance.

Today, we hold gratitude and care for all who served in the military, including the many Unitarian Universalists who gave of themselves in service to their country and communities. We honor those who died in war and military service, and the loved ones who carry their memory forward.

We also hold close the immeasurable human cost of violence—lives lost, families changed forever, communities shattered, and generations shaped by grief.

Veterans For Peace calls for a deeper kind of remembrance: one that resists turning this day into a celebration of militarism and instead asks us to reckon honestly with the human cost of war.

At a time when war and suffering continue across the globe, may we remember that every life carries inherent worth and dignity. And may we continue the work of building communities grounded in compassion, justice, and peace.
