Our Story

“For the worship of God and the proclamation of the Gospel”

The First Baptist Church of Bloomington was organized in 1837, a significant year in the history of Illinois, when Abraham Lincoln moved from New Salem to Springfield; Chicago was incorporated as a city; John Deere first showed a steel-pointed, self-scouring plow; the first printing press and newspaper appeared in Central Illi

nois; and Knox College was founded. Religiously, it was also the period in mainstream Protestantism known as the "Second Great Awakening" with its focus on "civilizing" the western frontier. John Mason Peck and others were calling Illinois Baptists to proliferate and organize. The organizing members of the congregation, all newly relocated residents seeking the opportunities of a new land, gathered on December 30, 1837 to establish a church of Baptist principles for the worship of God and the proclamation of the Gospel. These earliest members were of deep religious conviction, considering themselves to be missionaries with their mission being to bring people to salvation. Newell, the congregation's first pastor, was also supported by the Bloomington congregation in founding Baptist churches in other communities in the area. Newell became the president of Baptist-related Shurtleff College in Alton. From its earliest years, the First Baptist Church of Bloomington has been sending, teaching, preaching, and praising…all undergirded by worship. The "sending" included preachers with names like Fagerburg; missionaries to China and Africa; three current professional social workers to major cities; the first president of Judson College, Amos Barton; two presidents of the old Illinois Baptist State Convention, R.O. Ahlenius, and the establishment of two local missions and at least twelve other congregations in the area. Since the establishment of the Great Rivers Region of the American Baptist Churches, the church has provided numerous leaders for regional ministries, and has been the home of three Area Ministers. This faithful legacy of worship and witness continues to inspire and empower this congregation as it seeks to be faithful in ever new and unfolding ways.

[from an email from IM this afternoon] International Ministries (IM) is providing $10,000 in One Great Hour of Sharing (OGHS) emergency disaster relief funds to assist IM partners in Nepal with food and supplies in the aftermath of yesterday’s historic flooding.

IM’s emergency relief funds will help address the immediate survival needs, covering food, shelter, and emergency supplies to alleviate suffering.

Urgent Prayer Requests
IM calls for prayers in the face of this crisis:

For Those Displaced and Affected: Pray for comfort, safety, and resilience for families who have been evacuated or lost their homes. Ask for peace and strength as they face uncertainty and rebuild their lives.

For First Responders as they work to find survivors that are buried in homes and buildings that collapsed.

For Restoration of Critical Resources: Pray for the swift restoration of electricity, clean water, and communication systems. Ask for protection against potential health crises due to the inundation of areas by water and mud.

For Long-Term Recovery and Resilience: Pray for the rebuilding efforts to be effective and sustainable, especially in restoring homes and infrastructure. Ask for wisdom for leaders and communities to strengthen their resilience against future disasters.

Area Director for East and South Asia, Dr. Becky Shenton, is in communication with our partners in Nepal as they begin initial relief activities. We invite our supporters to join us through prayer and sharing this urgent call with others.

Those who wish to directly support IM’s local partners that provide disaster relief can do so through their American Baptist church, through giving online, or by sending checks directly to International Ministries. Please designate your contributions “OGHS–Nepal Relief” on the memo line of your check.

Checks sent directly to International Ministries should be made payable to “International Ministries” and mailed to: International Ministries. Attn: Gifts Processing 1003 W 9th Avenue, Ste A King of Prussia, PA 19406

One Great Hour of Sharing (OGHS) is administered by the World Relief Committee of the Board of General Ministries of American Baptist Churches USA. The Committee facilitates American Baptist emergency relief, disaster rehabilitation, refugee work, and development assistance by establishing policy guidelines and overseeing the distribution of the annual OGHS offering received by churches.

Update: thanks to some great workers (and with a little help from a chainsaw), we were able to take care of this need. If you know of people who still need help, please let us know.

For any FBC family and friends able to help - we have a family that needs some help with tree limb cleanup after the storm. Looking for 3-4 people able to drag/carry branches and cut pieces out to the curb, and one more person with a chainsaw would be helpful. Aiming at tomorrow afternoon after 1:30 or tomorrow evening.

Message us or reply to this post and we'll send more information/answer questions. Thanks!
