The Festival of Pentecost is a day full of celebration.

In the Old Testament, it was a festival of first fruits, similar to our celebration of Thanksgiving. People dropped everything they were doing and traveled to Jerusalem to offer God a tithe; the first fruits offering of thanksgiving to God for His blessing to them.

God chose this day as the birthday of His Church. There would be no Church without the working of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit brings faith through clear communication of God’s Word. Faith comes through hearing the Word.

The celebration of Pentecost beckons us to keep breathing, inhaling the Spirit of God into our very souls and exhaling the Word of God to the world. Pentecost challenges us to keep ourselves always open to the Spirit who seeks us out. The Spirit calls and enlightens us to make ourselves available to God, where He equips us for His mission and ministry. Share the birthday blessings with others.

We give thanks for these 27 children and their families and wish them God's blessings in Kindergarten and beyond.

In John 17:1-11 we hear Jesus praying His High Priestly Prayer, and He’s praying for you; He’s praying for your church family. He wants you to be people of His Word and Name unified as one Body with Him as the Head. His Body should function as ONE with Him as the Head and every member of the Body having a unique but unified function together as one for the purpose of His Kingdom.

Read John 17 today at home, and then pray for His will to be first done in your individual life and collectively as a unified church family. Pray that your life would be an answer to Jesus’ prayer that His will may be done to carry out His purpose in the world that needs the Good News of salvation.

It is not over.

Easter is not over.
Christ’s mission is not over.
Peace and pardon are not over.

Even as we gather tomorrow to commemorate the ascension of our Lord, nothing ends. It is not as if Christ ascends to heaven and takes all His blessings with Him! This world remains forever marked by His grace and love. And now, reigning over all things, our ascended Lord intercedes for us at His Father’s right hand. Christ remains present for us in His Word and Sacraments, and Christ’s Body, the church, continues the joyful proclamation that Christ is risen, and indeed, He is coming again!

Join us tomorrow at 8 or 10:30am, or 5pm.

At the time that Peter wrote today’s Epistle, Rome was in great need for Jesus Christ. Rome needed people who were truly committed to Jesus Christ as their Lord in their hearts, in their minds, and in their daily lifestyles.

Our world needs such people today. Jesus has sent His Holy Spirit to teach our hearts and equip us to defend that which we love. Have you set apart your heart for Jesus Christ and Him alone because He first loved you?

Ask the Holy Spirit to create a clean heart in you and then prepare that heart by setting it aside, consecrating it for Jesus Christ as your Lord. Spend time in prayer asking for God to prepare you to share the hope that you have in Christ. And then look out, because God will answer that prayer with people and opportunities.

So be bold. Be ready. Be prepared. In this hope, you have the forgiveness of your sin, your future secured, and your love unconditionally realized: Because He lives, you live!
