We are now more than half way through our Word and Prayer Initiative! And we are excited to see how God is going to move! Be intentional, be attentive, and be open for the Spirit to speak and guide you in your time of reading through God’s word and being in prayer.
This week, we are going to add one more element to our time of reading and reflecting on Scripture. Below, you will find that the passage of Scripture is duplicated - however - that is because it is the same passage of Scripture in two different translations. We want to encourage you to read both translations prayerfully and thoughtfully, and allow any differences and similarities to stick out and help guide your time of meditation, reflection, and prayer.
Remember to read these texts SLOWLY… and read the passage of Scripture at least 3-4 times (and because this week we have TWO translations of the same text, read each translation at least TWICE). Be willing to sit tight and really think about and pray over any word, phrase, sentence, concept, or thought that might be drawing your attention.
May the God of peace and grace be with you as you draw near to him in the Word, in Prayer, and in Worship.
Scripture: Titus 3:3-8
New International Version (NIV)
3 At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another. 4 But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, 5 he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life. 8 This is a trustworthy saying. And I want you to stress these things, so that those who have trusted in God may be careful to devote themselves to doing what is good. These things are excellent and profitable for everyone.
New Living Translation (NLT)
3 Once we, too, were foolish and disobedient. We were misled and became slaves to many lusts and pleasures. Our lives were full of evil and envy, and we hated each other. 4 But—
When God our Savior revealed his kindness and love, 5 he saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He washed away our sins, giving us a new birth and new life through the Holy Spirit. 6 He generously poured out the Spirit upon us through Jesus Christ our Savior. 7 Because of his grace he made us right in his sight and gave us confidence that we will inherit eternal life.
8 This is a trustworthy saying, and I want you to insist on these teachings so that all who trust in God will devote themselves to doing good. These teachings are good and beneficial for everyone.
Prayer Prompts:
Verses 5-7 speak of God washing away our sins and giving us a new birth through the Holy Spirit. Because of God’s grace, our lives have changed… How has your life changed? Have you ever fully committed your life to Jesus? What about now? As you pray, seek a cleansed heart and mind as you continually devote your whole life to God.
Are we devoting ourselves to doing good? What does doing “good” look like? As you pray, ask for the Spirit 1) to reveal what it is that is good and 2) to empower you to do that which is good.
