Since our goodness isn’t enough, what hope is there for those who’ve never heard of Jesus? Scripture shows that God is not passive, He actively pursues those who seek Him. Through perfectly timed visions and divine orchestration, God is arranging for the gospel to reach the seeker. Headlines will fade. Highlights become memories. The life Jesus gives is eternal. The miracle that heaven celebrates is the miracle of a changed heart as God turns sinners into saints. Don’t let the term saints intimidate you. It basically means those set apart for God. In Acts 9 we see God work through Peter in some big ways, and people came to believe. However, we also get introduced to Tabitha who impacted her community through doing good works and charity. Peter preached, Tabitha sewed. God used both. Don’t try to be someone else, but to be the best version of you God has created you, called you, and gifted you to be. You don’t need to preach to the masses or perform miracles to make an impact. Tabitha did it by making tunics and garments. How might God use you? 9

So much attention is given to powerhouses like Peter and radical conversions like Saul that we overlook and undervalue how the Spirit uses the everyday faithfulness of ordinary believers to help shape the stories of others. We will never know the impact of the unnamed believers whom Saul’s previous persecution scattered but went about proclaiming Jesus wherever they went (Acts 8:4). When Peter came to Lydda and Joppa in Acts 9, there were believers already there. Don’t undervalue the unsung heroes who are hidden in the background of the church walking in the fear of the Lord and by the Spirit; don’t undersell how God can use you when you follow the Spirit’s lead, for to undersell how God can use you is to undervalue the Holy Spirit who abides in you, if you are a believer. Are you walking in the fear of the Lord, and by His Spirit?

Paul the church planter was first Saul the persecutor; before Peter preached to the masses, he cowardly denied Jesus before a servant girl. No doubt we are drawn to the spectacular and flashy. The big turnaround testimonies, the mysterious medical recoveries, and viral medical moments. But don’t miss in Acts 9 that before Peter says to the paralyzed man, Jesus Christ heals you rise and make your bed, we read that the church was walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit and Peter went here and there among them all. Acts certainly gives us some highlights but don’t miss that for all the big moments there are innumerable unsung heroes and much uncelebrated work in the trenches that God is also using to build and multiply His church. Most of the Christian life is not in the highlight but the daily walk. Don’t underestimate the value of showing up and be prepared for those special moments when God shows up in a highlight moment. Where do you need to start showing up?

We are captivated by miracles that change bodies, but heaven rejoices over miracles that change hearts. The Spirit’s greatest work is not spectacle, but salvation—transforming sinners into people who walk in the fear of the Lord and the comfort of the Holy Spirit. We give God thanks for those who made the ultimate sacrifice to give and protect the freedoms that we enjoy, including the freedom to worship without fear. You, and your families are not forgotten. Thank you for your sacrifice!

In Acts 9 Barnabas takes Saul under his wing and speaks up for him. This early investment in this relationship will later yield a rich partnership in ministry. Not every relationship you invest in will work out. Not every time in study will yield a profound revelation. Not every time in worship may feel like “I have been in the presence of the Lord.” But growth occurs over time. Not every investment will turn out as you hope, but there is a guarantee of no return on investments never made. For those Saul/Paul invested in that deserted him there were others like Timothy and lists in his letters for whom he was greatly thankful. Whom or where might God be leading you to invest your life into? Jesus

Reading through the text of Acts 9 it may appear as though Saul was an overnight sensation; however, he was years in the making. Before coming to Christ, he was well studied in Hebrew scriptures, philosophy, and rhetoric. After coming to Christ, he began proclaiming what He knew: Jesus is the Son of God. That didn’t mean he had it all figured out, but he shared what he knew, and growth came through obedience, as he continued to invest time with other believers but also sitting with the Lord. Works like Romans would be years in the making. Often young believers look at mature believers and wish they had the same level of wisdom and knowledge, but they forget the experience and work it took to get there. Saul is proclaiming Christ but don’t jump over, and Saul increased all the more in strength (Acts 9:22). Luke is not referring to physical strength, but to understanding and ability to communicate the gospel, as the verse continues, confounding the Jews proving that Jesus was the Christ. Are you increasing in your understanding and ability to communicate the gospel?
