Join Rabbi Josh Franklin for an intimate evening of conversation and learning at the home of Rabbi Marc Katz on Sunday, June 14 at 7:00pm. Drawing on his new book Where Are You?: Finding Yourself in the Bible, Rabbi Franklin explores how the landscapes of the Bible—Eden, the wilderness, Sinai, and beyond—reflect the inner terrain of our own lives. Blending Torah, psychology, storytelling, and personal reflection, this promises to be a thoughtful and engaging discussion about meaning, identity, and the timeless question: “Where are you?”

Rabbi James Feder testified in Trenton in support of S3610, a bill that was successful voted out of committee and would diversify use of "New Jersey Nonprofit Security Grant Program" to include training and intelligence gathering.

Here is his testimony:

My name is Rabbi James Feder, and it was important to me to come today to voice my support for S3610.

The threats facing synagogues and other Jewish institutions — threats that we know are increasing in both number and intensity — are not theoretical to me or my community.

A little more than three years ago, someone tried to burn down my synagogue, Temple Ner Tamid in Bloomfield. In the early hours of a Sunday morning in January, a masked assailant hurled a Molotov cocktail at our front door.

I was actually the one who discovered the damage hours later when I arrived for religious school: broken glass by the entrance, burned fabric, and the smell of gasoline still in the air.

That the attack failed — that our synagogue did not go up in flames — is due in large part to the fact that we were prepared.
Thanks to security grants, every inch of glass in our building, including the front doors, had been reinforced with shatter-resistant film. Our locks had been strengthened. We had security cameras in place that ultimately helped police make an arrest.

Things could have gone very differently. What if our building lacked those additional layers of security? What if the attack had taken place while the building was full? On any given Sunday morning, there are more than 400 people in our building for religious school: students from kindergarten through high school, along with teachers, parents, and clergy.

A major disaster was averted that morning because support had been made available to our community through government security grants. These grants save lives.

The more they can do to prepare communities, the better. That’s why it’s so important that this bill allows nonprofit organizations to utilize grant funding for critical training and intelligence gathering efforts in addition to physical security enhancements. As we saw at Temple Israel in Milwaukee earlier this year, when the unthinkable happens and physical security measures fail, the safety of innocent lives comes down to the quality of the training staff have received.

Thank you for your consideration.

Passing this event on from our friends at B'nei Keshet:

The Great Divide: American Jews & Israel Today

Two of the most prominent American Jewish voices, Bret Stephens from The New York Times and Jeremy Ben Ami from JStreet, will speak at the Streicker Center in NYC on Monday 4/27 at 7:30 pm.

The event will be live-streamed. We will gather at B'nai Keshet to watch together, followed by a moderated discussion. After the program, there will be a discussion in the BK sanctuary moderated by BK congregant Rabbi E. Noach Shapiro, D.D., LCSW. Both speakers who are strong backers of a vibrant, democratic Israel, have been disagreeing for more than a decade about how to ensure such a future and how to maintain continuing support by American Jewry. Their differing opinions about how to balance morality against security, criticism against its misuse, and the role American Jews can and should play in Israeli politics will be central to their discussion, moderated by journalist, author and a moderator of public conversations Abigail Pogrebin.

Join us for a special evening at Temple Ner Tamid on Thursday, April 16 at 7:30pm

We are excited to welcome Alan Morinis, acclaimed Mussar teacher and bestselling author, for an inspiring conversation about his newest book, Shabbat: A Day to Create Yourself.
In this meaningful and timely work, Morinis reimagines Shabbat as more than a day of rest. Drawing on the rich wisdom of the Mussar tradition, he invites us to see Shabbat as a weekly opportunity to step away from the constant demands of productivity and reconnect with what matters most—cultivating presence, gratitude, humility, and deeper relationships with ourselves, with others, and with God.

The evening will feature an engaging conversation between Alan Morinis and Rabbi Marc Katz, exploring how we can reclaim the transformative power of Shabbat in our modern lives.

We hope you’ll join us for what promises to be a thoughtful and enriching program.
