Birmingham Unitarian Church

Birmingham Unitarian Church Free and welcoming religious community that encourages lives of integrity, learning, service, and joy

BUC was founded in 1948 when a group broke away from First Unitarian Universalist Church of Detroit with the goal of bringing Unitarianism to the northwestern suburbs. After a decade of meeting in living rooms and schools, we broke ground on our current campus on the corner of Lone Pine and Woodward in Bloomfield Hills. In the intervening years, the building has grown and changed, and we along wit

h it. We are a justice-making, truth-seeking people; a group of dreamers and doers; believers, seekers, and doubters. We believe in celebrating our theological and philosophical differences. We believe in living out our faith by committing to social justice matters like the climate crisis, LGBTQ+ equity, and confronting racism in ourselves and our world. Unitarian Universalists have a core set of values called the Eight Principles that unite and guide us. We affirm and promote:

1- The inherent worth and dignity of every person
2- Justice, equity, compassion in human relations
3- Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations
4- A free and responsible search for truth and meaning
5- The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large
6- The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all
7- Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part
8- Journeying toward spiritual wholeness by working to build a diverse multicultural Beloved Community by our actions that accountably dismantle racism and other oppressions in ourselves and our institutions.

In our Sunday, May 31 youth-led service, we celebrated life's milestones and another year of growth and opportunity. Our Coming of Age youth shared their credos, marking their transition from childhood to adolescence, and we recognized our high school graduates as they enter young adulthood. Memorial Day Prayer

Spirit of Life
whom we have called by many names
in thanksgiving and in anguish—

Bless the poets and those who mourn
Send peace for the soldiers who did not make the wars
but whose lives were consumed by them

Let strong trees grow above graves far from home
Breathe through the arms of their branches
The earth will swallow your tears while the dead sing
"No more, never again, remember me."

For the wounded ones, and those who received them back,
let there be someone ready when the memories come
when the scars pull and the buried metal moves
and forgiveness for those of us who were not there
for our ignorance.

And in us, veterans in a forest of a thousand fallen
promises,
let new leaves of protest grow on our stumps.

Give us courage to answer the cry of humanity’s pain
And with our bare hands, out of full hearts,
with all our intelligence
let us create the peace.

Generativity, in simplest terms, is "the ability or power to generate or produce something." To psychologists, the term "generativity" contrasts with "stagnation." How can we be "generative" and not "stagnant"? Watch the recording of our Sunday, May 10 worship service.

Mother’s Day can hold many things at once.

For some, it is a day of joy, gratitude, and celebration.
For others, it carries grief, estrangement, longing, exhaustion, complicated relationships, or the ache of what never was.

Today, we honor all who nurture, care for, protect, guide, and love others in ways both named and unnamed. We hold close those missing their mothers, grieving children, navigating infertility or loss, carrying complicated family histories, or moving through this day with mixed emotions.

May we meet one another with gentleness.
May we make room for the fullness of people’s experiences.
And may all who need care today receive a little more of it. 💛
