Pigweed

Cursed is the ground for your sake; in toil you shall eat of it.
Genesis 3:17

The New York Times ran an article titled “Attack of the Superweeds.” Some unwanted plants have developed a resistance to modern herbicides. Pigweed, for example, can grow three inches a day, and it’s no longer threatened by sprays. It can also suppress corn yields by up to ninety percent.1

Recommended Reading:
Revelation 22:1-5
When Adam and Eve disobeyed God, all creation was affected. The ground was cursed so that weeds grew more easily than crops—as all of us who have gardened know. But there’s wonderful news. During the thousand-year reign of Christ the curse will be abated. The ground will become more fruitful. And after the thousand years, we’ll receive a new heaven and new earth. Revelation 22:3 says, “And there shall be no more curse, but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it.”

Sin and sinful habits do a lot of damage. We have to work to eradicate them from our patterns of life, just as we have to pull weeds from our gardens. But in the Millennium, the curse will be abated, and in eternity it will be totally absent. So rejoice over that the next time you deal with pigweed!

The Curse is real, but it is temporary. Jesus is the cure for the Curse.

Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.

--1 Peter 3:7

According to God’s plan for marriage, the husband has two major responsibilities.

First, according to today’s verse, the husband must understand his wife. Now, to understand our wives means to honor them.

What a vivid description of love – to honor. If you are wondering how to show honor, think of it like this. To honor your wife means to see her as a treasure, to hold her dear, and to cherish her as a precious gift.

Husbands, do you love your wife like that? Do you see her as a gift from God?

This verse also refers to understanding your wife’s needs. Gary Smalley, a noted Christian counselor and marriage expert, lists these nine specific needs.

A wife:

Needs to feel that she is first place in her husband’s life.
Needs to feel that her husband is willing to share an intimate moment of comfort without demanding explanation or giving lectures.
Needs constant communication.
Longs to be praised so she can feel valuable.
Wants to feel free to correct her husband without fear of retaliation or anger.
Needs to know that her husband will defend and protect her.
Wants to know that her opinion is so valuable that her husband will discuss decisions with her, evaluate her advice, and then act upon it.
Needs to share her life with her husband in every area—home, family, and outside interests.
Wants her husband to be the kind of man her son can follow and her daughter would want to marry.
Secondly, a husband is to undergird his wife with emotional, spiritual and physical support. Why? Because we share the love and grace of God, hand in hand. And we should see each other through the eyes of grace… as God sees us.

YOUR WIFE IS A GIFT FROM GOD!

Only the Beginning

His lord said to him, “Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.”
Matthew 25:21

Awards and rewards are presented in all segments of society: sports, business, government, military, entertainment, and more. And it starts at an early age—what child doesn’t delight in receiving a gold star for a job well done? Almost all human awards have one thing in common: They focus on past behavior or achievements.

Recommended Reading:
1 Corinthians 3:10-15
For all who inherit a place in Christ’s future Millennial Kingdom, a different kind of reward will be received—a reward that focuses on the future. Rewards for faithfulness in this life will result in the privilege of service for Christ in His Kingdom in the future. The Millennium is not going to be a thousand-year vacation. Rather, it will be the manifestation of God’s just rule and economy on earth as administered by the saints of God who inherit the Kingdom. In Jesus’ parable of the talents, the servants who were faithful over some things were then made rulers over many things (Matthew 25:14-30).

Our service for Christ in this life is not the end—it is only the beginning!

The highest honor in the church is not government but service.

In Our Element

Happy are the people who know the joyful shout; Lord, they walk in the light from your face.
Psalm 89:15, CSB

A. W. Tozer said, “The people of God ought to be the happiest people in all the wide world! People should be coming to us constantly and asking the source of our joy and delight.” Charles Spurgeon felt the same way, writing, “God made human beings as He made His other creatures, to be happy…. They are in their right element when they are happy.”

Recommended Reading:
Psalm 89:11-18
One day the world will be filled with joy when Christ returns. Isaac Watts wrote, “Joy to the World,” which is actually based on the Millennial passage of Psalm 98 about the Second Coming. But we don’t have to wait for the return of Christ to be happy. He lives in, among, and through us right now by His Spirit. Choose happiness today!

Francis of Assisi said, “Let us leave sadness to the devil and his angels. As for us, what can we be but rejoicing and glad!” And Jonathan Edwards added, “He has created man for this very end, to make him happy in the enjoyment of himself, the Almighty, who was happy from the days of eternity in himself.”

Man is more himself…when joy is the fundamental thing in him.
G. K. Chesterton

“…saying with a loud voice: ‘Worthy is the Lamb who was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom, and strength and honor and glory and blessing!’”

REVELATION 5:12

PONDER THIS
A woman was once trapped in an apartment building. A brave fireman saw her at the window screaming for help, so he climbed a ladder to rescue her, taking her in his arms and bringing her down that ladder. He saved her life. Later, she went to the firehouse to thank that fireman. They got acquainted, began to date, got married, and I trust, lived happily ever after.

When she was in that window saying, “Help me! Save me!” that’s like praying, “God, I’ve got a need. I need you.” When we call on God for help when we’re in trouble, that is petition. We need to do that, to call on God for what we need. When the woman went to the firehouse to say thank you, that’s like praise and thanksgiving. We need to do that too. We ought to come to God, thank Him, glorify Him, and praise Him for what He has done for us. But we also need to worship Him. When the woman and the fireman fell in love and got married, she didn’t just love him because he had rescued her but for who he was. Out of that love, she gave all of her to all of him. That is like worship.

This is where many of us fall short. Sometimes our prayers are for help and salvation, which is wonderful. Sometimes we’re saying, “Thank you, Lord, for what you’ve done,” and that’s great too. But how many times have we simply come to God and said, “O God, I just pour out my heart in love to you.” That is true worship. And we need to do it more.

When was the last time you truly worshiped God?
How can you worship God on a regular basis?

Don’t Get Down!

Never again will there be in it an infant who lives but a few days, or an old man who does not live out his years; the one who dies at a hundred will be thought a mere child.
Isaiah 65:20, NIV

One elderly man said to another, “I’m so old that my blood type has been discontinued.” The other replied, “Yes, but you can’t let aging get you down. It’s too hard to get back up!”

Recommended Reading:
Isaiah 65:17-25
We laugh about getting older, and we take great comfort in God’s promise to care for us all our days. The Bible says, “Even to your old age and gray hairs…I am he who will sustain you” (Isaiah 46:4, NIV).

Yet there are two things better than living to a ripe old age. The first is living to be hundreds of years old; the other is enjoying eternal life. Both blessings will be present during the Golden Age. When Jesus sets up His Kingdom, lifespans will return to the patterns we see early in Genesis—hundreds of years. Meanwhile, those who have been raptured and resurrected will have ageless, glorified, eternal bodies.

Today is only the most recent installment in a life that never ends. Enjoy it!

The Second Coming of Christ will be so revolutionary that it will change every aspect of life on this planet.

“He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him.”

JOHN 14:21

PONDER THIS
If you read and study the Bible but don’t apply it, it’ll backfire on you. Inspiration apart from obedience will cause the Word of God to sour in you just like food you eat but fail to digest. You must put these things into practice. Don’t sing, “O How I Love Jesus” if you’re not receiving and keeping His commandments.

Many of you are saying, “Jesus Christ is not real to me. I wish He were real to me. Why isn’t God more real to me? Why is it that some people seem to be so happy in Jesus? Why is it that some people say God is very real and dear and precious to them? He is not to me!” Listen to the words of Jesus in today’s Scripture. You can study the Bible and learn about God, or you can obey the Bible and know God. Bible study gives knowledge about God; walking in His way gives knowledge of God.

You must receive the saving author of the Bible; you must recognize the sovereign authority of the Bible; you must resolve a serious analysis of the Bible; and you must respond with a steadfast application of the Bible. Act on the truths of God’s Word, and I promise this Bible will become real to you.

When is it challenging to apply the Word of God? Why?
What is some truth from the Word that you need to apply to your life?

Ask God to help you obey His commands.

Perfect Judge, Perfect Justice

Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end, upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, to order it and establish it with judgment and justice from that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.
Isaiah 9:7

With the advent of DNA technology came the use of that technology in solving crimes. The Innocence Project, founded in 1992, has used DNA testing to overturn the convictions of more than two hundred wrongly convicted persons. Even in our modern criminal justice systems, it is still possible for justice not to be reached. In a fallen world, when justice is administered by fallible human beings, the outcomes can lead to injustice.

Recommended Reading:
Isaiah 11:1-5
There will be no such injustice when Jesus Christ rules with perfect justice during the Millennium. As Isaiah prophesied, “And He shall not judge by the sight of His eyes, nor decide by the hearing of His ears; but with righteousness He shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth” (Isaiah 11:3-4). The justice will be perfect because the Judge will be perfect.

If you have ever been judged unfairly without recourse, put your faith in the just Judge who will balance the scales “even forever.”

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.

Shaking Things Up

On that day his feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, east of Jerusalem. And the Mount of Olives will split apart.
Zechariah 14:4, NLT

A woman named Emma Burke wrote about the 1906 San Francisco earthquake: “It was 5:13 a.m., and my husband had arisen and lit the gas stove…. The shock came and hurled my bed against an opposite wall…. The shock was constantly growing heavier; rumbles, crackling noises, and falling objects already commenced the din.”1

Recommended Reading:
Zechariah 14:1-9
Sudden earthquakes are fearful, shocking events. The Bible teaches that when the feet of Jesus descend to the Mount of Olives at the Second Coming, an earthquake will split open the ridge, producing great topological changes to Jerusalem and Israel.

When Christ appears, He shakes things up. In a similar way, when Jesus comes into our lives, we tremble and are transformed. He unleashes the hidden rivers of the Holy Spirit in our hearts, He makes old habits fall away, and He raises up new territories of praises for Himself.

Let the Lord shake you up for His glory!

Sometimes your medicine bottle has on it, “SHAKE WELL BEFORE USING.” This is what God has to do with some of His people…. Shake them well before they are ever usable.

The Highest of All

And [Christ] has on His robe and on His thigh a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.
Revelation 19:16

Even people who have never read the book of Revelation are familiar with phrases from 17:14 and 19:16 that refer to Christ as King of kings and Lord of lords. Why? Because they have heard those phrases in the “Hallelujah Chorus” which concludes Part II of George Frederic Handel’s Messiah. Some of the words in that famous chorus say: “The kingdom of this world is become the kingdom of our Lord, and of His Christ.... King of kings, for ever and ever, and Lord of lords, hallelujah, hallelujah!... And He shall reign for ever and ever.”

Recommended Reading:
Revelation 17:14
The superlative expression in Hebrew—as in “King of kings”—is used numerous times in Scripture: slave of slaves (Genesis 9:25), holy of holies (Exodus 26:33-34), vanity of vanities (Ecclesiastes 1:2), song of songs (Song of Solomon 1:1). It simply meant the highest of the highs or lowest of the lows.

The Christ we serve is King above all earthly kings and Lord above all earthly lords. And He shall reign forever and ever! Hallelujah!

Death may be the king of terrors, but Jesus is the King of kings.
Dwight L. Moody

“Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ’s behalf, be reconciled to God. For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”

2 CORINTHIANS 5:20-21

PONDER THIS
We’ve been reconciled by Calvary. God has brought us to Himself. However, God did not save you simply to sit, but to serve. We have been reconciled. Therefore, it follows that we have been given a ministry of reconciliation; that is, to help people be reconciled to God. In this verse, Paul says we are appointed as Heaven’s ambassadors. And an ambassador is somebody who represents a ruler in another’s court or country.

You say, “Well, I don’t have much education. I don’t have any money.” You are still an ambassador! Can you get any higher than being an ambassador to the King of kings? You are somebody. God Himself has appointed you. And if you’re not interested in being an ambassador when you have been appointed as an ambassador, you are guilty of treason against Heaven’s King. To refuse is not only to be ineffective but also to be in revolt.

If you received a thousand dollars cash for every soul you led to Christ, would it make a difference in your life? It would get you moving; it would motivate you. You need that motivation not for money but because you share the same motivation as Paul in 2 Corinthians 5:9, and you can say, “I do this so that I might please Him.”

How do you currently represent Christ in the things you do every day?
How could you grow in representing Him? Explain.
PRACTICE THIS
Serve someone or extend love to someone today in a Christ-like way, as an ambassador of Christ.
