Instability & Crisis: Homelessness in Berks County
Tuesday November 3rd, 2026
7:00 pm
Kutztown Tavern
Homelessness is often more complicated—and closer to home—than many people realize. Alyssa Bushkie, CEO of Opportunity House, will share a look at homelessness in Berks County, the circumstances that can lead individuals and families to experience housing instability, and what it takes to help someone move from crisis toward stability.
Alyssa will also provide an inside look at Opportunity House and the many ways the organization serves the community—from emergency shelter and housing programs to early childhood education, food access, and reuse and recycling initiatives. Through local data, real-world experiences, and stories from Opportunity House, she will highlight both the challenges facing our community and the work happening every day to help people build a path toward permanent housing and greater independence.
Before serving as CEO of Opportunity House, Alyssa was the COO, and has contributed to significant growth in the organization’s programs and community impact. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Education from Penn State Berks and a master’s degree in Strategic Human Resource Management from Saint Joseph’s University, as well as a certificate in Nonprofit Leadership from La Salle University and the Certified Nonprofit Professional (CNP) credential. In 2026,
she was honored with the Penn State Berks Alumni Achievement Award.
