You’re never going to become a friend of God in your spare time. To become his friend, you must make knowing him your number one priority.
Paul says it like this: “Everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ” (Philippians 3:8 NLT). Are you doing that? Are you seeking God with all your heart every day?
Remember: You are as close to God as you choose to be. You’re going to become a friend of God only when you decide you want to become a friend of God.
If you feel far from God, guess who moved? You did. You can’t blame anyone else. You can’t blame your spouse, your parents, or your kids. It’s you who didn’t make him the number one priority of your life. Knowing and loving God is humanity’s greatest privilege. And being known and being loved by God is our greatest pleasure.
I’ve noticed that you can tell what’s important to people by what they brag about. If their kids are most important, they brag about their kids. If their job is the most important thing in their life, they brag about their job. If travel and having experiences is most important, that’s what they talk about. If partying or buying new clothes is what you talk about most, guess what you value most? You brag about what you value most.
God says in Jeremiah 9:23-24, “The wise should not boast of their wisdom, nor the strong of their strength, nor the rich of their wealth. If any want to boast, they should boast that they know and understand me” (GNT). Knowing God is what matters most—it’s what life is all about. The God of the universe loves you and wants to have a relationship with you. And getting close to him will give you peace and perspective. That’s good news!
Ask yourself this,
How do you need to re-prioritize your life so that getting to know God better is your number one priority?
What do you see in yourself?
Based on what you talk about most, what would people say is most important to you?
What you brag about is what’s most important to you. How can you boast about your relationship with God in your everyday conversations?

Rick Warren (August-03-2022) Daily Devotional: Healthy Relationships Depend on Selflessness

“The person who plants selfishness, ignoring the needs of others—ignoring God!—harvests a crop of weeds. All he’ll have to show for his life is weeds! But the one who plants in response to God, letting God’s Spirit do the growth work in him, harvests a crop of real life, eternal life.” Galatians 6:7-8 (The Message)

Selfishness destroys relationships. It is the number one cause of conflict, arguments, divorce, and even war.

James 4:1 says, “What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you?” (NIV). Every trouble starts because of self-centeredness.

It’s very easy for selfishness to enter relationships. When you start a relationship, you work really hard at being unselfish. But as time goes on, selfishness begins to creep in. People tend to put more energy into starting and building relationships than they do in maintaining them.

If selfishness destroys relationships, then it is selflessness that makes them grow. What does selflessness mean? It means less of “me” and more of “you.” It means thinking of others more than you think of yourself and putting other people’s needs before your own. As Philippians 2:4 says, “Everyone should look not to his own interests, but rather to the interests of others” (CSB).

Selflessness brings out the best in people. It builds trust in relationships. In fact, if you start acting selfless in a relationship, the other person changes too; when you’re selfless, you’re not the same person anymore so they have to relate to you in a different way.

I’ve seen it many times. Some of the most unlovable people that no one wants to be around are transformed when someone is kind and selfless toward them. When someone is given what they need, not what they deserve, they change in beautiful ways.

The Bible says in Galatians 6:7-8, “The person who plants selfishness, ignoring the needs of others—ignoring God!—harvests a crop of weeds. All he’ll have to show for his life is weeds! But the one who plants in response to God, letting God’s Spirit do the growth work in him, harvests a crop of real life, eternal life” (The Message).

This is the biblical principle of sowing and reaping. What you sow, you’re going to reap. When you sow selflessness, you reap God’s blessing. This is how he’s wired the universe: the more unselfish you are, the more he blesses you. He wants you to become like him, and he is unselfish. Everything you have is a gift from God, a result of his unselfishness toward you. And, ultimately, God rewards selflessness with eternal life.

While you’re here on this Earth, though, you’ll be most fulfilled when you give yourself away. Jesus said, “Only those who throw away their lives for my sake and for the sake of the Good News will ever know what it means to really live” (Mark 8:35 TLB).

Talk It Over

What is one of the hardest things for you to give to someone else? (Maybe it’s your time, your money, or your emotional resources.)
How can you practice giving that thing away this week?
In what ways have you seen God bless you when you are unselfish?
Have you trusted Jesus with your life?

The Bible says you can only get to heaven by trusting in God through his Son, Jesus Christ. You cannot earn your way into heaven: "It is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast" (Ephesians 2:8-9 NIV).

If you’re ready to confess your sins and to trust Jesus with your life, start with this prayer:

“Dear God, you have promised that if I believe in Jesus, everything I’ve ever done wrong will be forgiven, I will learn the purpose of my life, and you will accept me into your eternal home in heaven one day.

“I confess my sin, and I submit to Jesus as my Savior and Lord. Jesus, I want to follow you and serve you. I humbly commit my life to you and ask you to save me and accept me into your family. In your name I pray. Amen.”

He Saw

“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.” Colossians 3:12

Compassion is the simple difference between denying reality and embracing it. “He saw” is the headline of compassion in the life of Christ — eyes wide open. Wherever He went, He was willing to do what He could in the moment. Jesus would see people without food, empathize with their plight, and make provision to feed them. He would see grieving people, experience an internal reaction, and weep with them. He would see directionless people, react with compassion, and start teaching them. By the life of Jesus we see that compassion means being responsible with the fragile realities around us. “Not my problem” was not in the vocabulary of Jesus, because the people around him were a part of His reality.

Compassion comes from seeing reality and not running from, denying, or hiding from it. Not self-absorbed, Jesus was free to see reality and act. Some He could fix in the moment. Others would take a while. And still others would have to wait for His return. But that did not stop Him from acting.

If you are afraid of truth and reality, you will have a distant expression of compassion. We must ask ourselves, do I embrace reality and work with it, or do I rationalize running from it? You will see a direct connection in your ability to act compassionately.

Father, may I see, open my eyes to those who are hurting and give me the courage to act.

One Ambition

“If anyone comes after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.” Matthew 16:24

In today’s post modern culture our determination and faith fly in the face of a culture that makes feelings and personal beliefs the only true indicators of right and wrong. Today only bigots, terrorists, or political extremists hold to strong beliefs. But that’s exactly why we thrive in this age and will be successful wherever we land. Our ambitions, focus, and single–minded faith in the Great Commission and the Greatest Commandment come from a grace awakening, not a brainwashing. I want you to stay strong in grace because what saved you will also sustain you as you embark on a pathway of leadership and service to God.

There is a long tradition of God’s leaders encouraging God’s men to live out God’s purposes single–mindedly. Jesus told His men of His upcoming suffering at the cross and then used that reality to motivate them. He was honest and clear. He would have to reject other pursuits, carry the responsibility of a God’s man, and follow Him loyally to the end. He modeled for us how to call men to a mission. The call to the multitudes was different than the charge to His men.

Paul’s style and approach was equally bold with Timothy in his charge, Paul knew he had just dropped a bomb on Timothy that would require some heavy reflection. “Pause” he advised. “Think deeply and continuously on what I have just said.” This is big, Timothy was going to have to take on a single identity, passion, and goal. He would have to train hard, work hard and focus on results. God has much to give a man of God, accept it.

Father, I’m your man, I’m your leader, I’m your God’s man.
