There is a subtle danger in offering God what costs us nothing.
King David understood this when he refused to offer the Lord a sacrifice that had been freely given to him. His words have echoed through history:
"I will not sacrifice to the Lord my God burnt offerings that cost me nothing." (2 Samuel 24:24)
David knew that true worship is not measured by appearance but by surrender. It is possible to sing without giving God our hearts.
To serve without sacrificing our comfort.
To give what is convenient while withholding what is costly.
The Lord has never been impressed by empty religious activity. Throughout Scripture, He continually calls His people to wholehearted devotion rather than outward performance. He desires obedience over ritual, humility over pride, and love over obligation.
Following Christ has always involved sacrifice.
Sometimes it costs our time.
Sometimes it costs our reputation.
Sometimes it means laying down pride, forgiving someone who hurt us, turning away from sin, or trusting God when obedience feels difficult.
These are the offerings that cannot be purchased or borrowed from someone else. They come from hearts that genuinely love the Lord.
The cross itself reminds us that our salvation came at an immeasurable cost. Christ did not withhold Himself from us. He gave everything.
May we never become content offering God what requires nothing from us.
May our worship be sincere, our obedience wholehearted, and our lives living sacrifices that honor the One who first gave Himself for us.
