Sitting here at the memorial garden at Meeks Park. Some days it hits you harder than others. Two of my boys went to be with the Lord-Monti it’s been almost 20 years- he was only 13 months old. So severely shaken by his bios that he had no measurable brain function. Lived off his brain stem. Worst seizures and storming ever-day and night. His little body was worn out.
Jaycob has gained his perfect body a little over two years ago. No one thought he would live to be one. Trach and gtube dependent. Couldn’t even turn himself over in bed. But when he would hear his favorite songs. His little legs would be kicking. Priceless. He was 18 years old! Boy do I miss these two. Then you live daily with -knowing that one terrible seizure overnight could take either one of my younger girls (Caity or Caila) home to be with the Lord.
Living the life of a special needs parents is not easy-never. But God gives us the strength to live in the moment and make every moment count.

How can the church become a community in which disability is received as part of the diverse ecology of God’s good creation?

“The message from church and culture alike to many people with disabilities has been that their lives are, at best, an exception to God’s design and, at worst, a problem to be resolved. Their differences are often received as intrusions into an otherwise idealized human norm,” wrote John Swinton last year.

“Such a vision turns the hospitable logic of creation on its head. It suggests that belonging is conditional, and therefore one must change in order to be welcomed. In this way, communal belonging that was meant to reflect God’s goodness becomes a place of exclusion.

The church must learn to hear and resist this distortion. If God’s creation is good, then every life within it, regardless of capacity, cognition, or conformity, is already gifted with divine affirmation.”
