The Purpose of Good News Jail & Prison Ministry is to reach every inmate in the world with the Good News of Jesus Christ that they might become growing disciples. The work of Good News Jail & Prison Ministry is to plant and build the church of Jesus Christ around the world. Our work takes us to places most would never consider – jails and prisons – where we are seeing God do amazing things in the

hearts and lives of men, women and children behind bars. Our Mission is to place Christian chaplains in jails and prisons to minister to the spiritual needs of inmates and staff
We believe the most effective tool for ministering to the needs of inmates and staff is the daily presence of a chaplain. The chaplain serves as evangelist, pastor, counselor, mentor and friend to those who are incarcerated and the staff who guard and protect them.

"We didn't think anyone would remember us. But you did!" It's a comment we hear every year, after giving out this small bag of love to men and women incarcerated in our area. While the contents of the bag are greatly appreciated, the most important gift is just being remembered by people who care.

As always, we can use your help on this special outreach.

The Christmas Agape gift will include:

Full size Hershey bar
Snack size bag of peanuts
Assorted individually wrapped candies
Lip balm
Christmas cards with postage to mail family
And Scripture portions with a Gospel Tract

Just choose one item and start collecting - and this is a great project to get others involved!

If you attended the Good News Banquet in May, you met our friend Pam and heard her story of overcoming since her release from jail in 2023. In September, Pam was awarded the statewide, Virginia Cares Stacy Martin Award in recognition of her exceptional efforts in reentering society since her release. According to their website, "Virginia CARES (Community Action Re-Entry System) is a heralded, statewide network of Community Action Agencies (CAAs) formed to address the successful reentry and de-institutionalization of felons in the Commonwealth of Virginia."
Through the years, we've been very grateful to the many agency partners in our community who provide resources in beginning a new life on release from jail. Of course, it all begins with a new heart in Jesus Christ!
Thank you to you for your partnership in taking hope to those like Pam, who are often forgotten.

After being extradited from several states away, John was greeted at the jail being told, "You're going to have a lot of deputies upset with you. Almost half of them were out looking for you and now might have to be laid off since they don't have anything to do!"

John had spent months running from a warrant for his arrest - traveling as far as he could and injecting whatever drugs he could afford to score. When he was finally arrested and brought back to Virginia, he was relieved. The jest that welcomed him assured him that he could now stop, his running was over. Of course, he wasn't just running from the legal system, he had been running from God.

While in the Pittsylvania County Jail, John would begin attending worship services and completed the Good News Bible Correspondence Course. Deputies and correctional staff began to notice the change in John. It wasn't just that his health began to return, Christ was changing his attitude and vocabulary. What was once conversations filled with vulgar cursing, was now words of encouragement and praise.

Today, John is back in jail. In fact, each week the former addict, now businessman, teaches Bible study with me, giving testimony to how God changed his life and will change theirs too!

Thank you for your partnership in taking hope to those, like John, who are so often forgotten!

Recently, I noticed a FB post from a friend, and it immediately reminded me of a much earlier time in his life...

We found our seats just behind the family members who had invited us to the George Washington High School Orchestra concert. My mind was filled with amazement of a gifted young violinists as the soft music floated through the auditorium. Not many could have anticipated his dedication to study and to be a part of such an elite group. As young children, he and his older brother were left in the care of an elderly aunt who was not physically able to handle two very active boys. Their mother was in jail, and they lived in an area overwhelmed by crime. They were just more "statistics" that would likely be absorbed by incarceration. But Jesus would change everything.

The Prayer Warrior elderly aunt with whom they lived and the influence of Christ-like men in a local church would provide guidance to help change the course of these two young statistics. Their mother, who struggled with addiction, came to know Christ as her Lord and Savior while in the Danville City Jail. She would leave jail a changed person which in turn, would forever change the life of her boys.

What an incredible blessing to witness how God "confounds the wise" who could so easily set aside children as just another crime statistic! I witnessed a mother who was able to guide her children through high school and college because she never went back to jail. I witnessed the two little boys grow into men who made their mother proud - all because of Jesus.

As he came into the room for Bible study, "Andy" shared a simple testimony, "I love my new life in Christ! Thank you, Jesus!"

When Andy first prayed to trust in Christ as his savior, he knew very little about God's Word, but he knew there was hope in Christ and wanted to know more. Each week he comes into class hungry to learn and full of questions about what he has read in the Bible. Andy has studied through more than a hundred Bible course lessons, searching through God's Word to know God and grow closer. Yet, it would be the word of a sheriff's deputy who provided an even better testimony for Andy, "I don't know what y'all talk about each week - but Andy sure is easier to get along with than he used to be."

"You wouldn't remember me, but I met you 30 years ago at W. W. Moore Juvenile Detention Center. It's taken me all these years to understand what you were telling us about Jesus." "Bill" continued his testimony in the Pittsylvania County Jail, saying, "I prayed to receive Jesus Christ as my Savior in church before getting locked up. I quit running from the law after and turned myself in."

Bill has had quite a long journey since he first heard about Jesus. Your faithfulness to partner with Good News through the years has made a great difference in his life. The Message of Hope you sent to Bill many years ago would echo through his heart for over 30 years!

"You gotta take something off before you can put something on. You gotta take off the world's clothes before putting on the armor of God!" It's been over 30 years since hearing Pastor John's message on Ephesians 6, but I'll never forget it. And I've no doubt, the six men who stepped away from the group in Camp 15 Correctional Unit that Sunday night to trust in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, will never forget it either!

Thank you for your faithful partnership with Good News taking hope to those so often forgotten behind the walls.

Pam was sitting in a jail cell a year ago today wondering how she was going to make it on the outside when released in August. She came home to an empty house - thieves had stolen literally everything during her absence. The utilities had been shut off and she didn't have the money to even buy food. But it was home. In the months ahead, Christ followers she had met while in jail began to help her with food, rides and household items. Determining to overcome the destruction brought through addiction she said, "I am going to work harder to maintain sobriety than I did to get drugs." Yet, like many others after release, she was without any reliable transportation and more importantly, a valid driver's license.

Today we celebrated with Pam as she passed her driving test and was presented with her Virginia driver's license! In addition, Pam was able to purchase a "new to her" car!

Thank you for your partnership in taking hope to those, like Pam, who are so often forgotten!

"Lacy" spoke up to share a testimony during our Bible study as we talked about the importance of going into an addictions program once released from jail. She said, "I went into this program where we made birdhouses and then painted them. I would complain, saying 'What's this got to do with staying off drugs?' After making them, they told us to sign our name on the bottom of the bird house. I got an apartment after finishing the program but needed help with the utility deposit. When I visited a church to ask for help, the lady in the office told me they couldn't help. I just sat down and started crying feeling hopeless. She asked if she could pray for me and for my name. When I said my name, the lady told me, 'We bought a bird house that you made, and we pray for you every night!'" Lacy then told the group, "That lady and her husband paid for my deposit. God provided that blessing for me way back before I ever needed it. I've thought about it a lot and know He is using this time for me to grow in my faith."

Thank you for your partnership with Good News in taking hope to many, who like Lacy, are discovering God has a plan for their life, even when building a bird house!

"Larry" asked an important question in Bible study today, "How can we love someone who hates? There's a guy in my pod who hates everybody and even when he's not talking, you see his hate in all of his tattoos. How can we possibly love someone like that?" One of the other men in Bible study spoke up saying, "But what about us? Jesus loved us and died for our sins and we're no better than that guy. When I think about God's holiness and my sin, I can't imagine why He loved me. He loves that guy too. We're supposed to be like Jesus which means we got to love that guy."

These four men in Bible study were living 24/7 with someone who seemed unlovable, yet, with great courage they are following Christ in obedience to love. That's seems impossible. Yet, God calls us to do the impossible!
