All are invited. All are welcome! Maundy or Holy Thursday is the day when the church commemorates Jesus’ institution of the Holy Eucharist, known as the Last Supper as well as his washing of the disciples feet to remind them that they are to serve one another. At the end of the Liturgy, the altar is stripped of all its finery in preparation for Good Friday.
Good Friday is the day we commemorate Jesus’ suffering and death on the cross and is the most solemn day of the Christian year. The church is bare and darkly lit, tomb-like. In the afternoon we walk in Jesus’ steps with the Stations of the Cross, at night, a solemn liturgy and reading of the Passion according to St. John.
The Great Vigil of Easter occurs the evening of Holy Saturday. The liturgy is the first celebration of Easter. This beautiful candlelit service begins in darkness, and consists of four parts: The Service of Light (kindling of new fire, lighting the Paschal candle, the Exsultet); The Service of Lessons (readings from the Hebrew Scriptures interspersed with psalms, canticles, and prayers); the Renewal of Baptismal Vows; and the Eucharist.
