The BJCC celebrated PJ Library's 18th Birthday with the opening of two book nooks at our synagogue on April 7. Madelyn Rosenberg, who grew up in Blacksburg and is the author of multiple PJL and PJOW books, joined us for a book talk. Madelyn was the first b'nai mitzvah student to have her bat mitzvah service at our facility. She shared her memories of growing up in Blacksburg and of the excitement when the building was purchased. She and other kids helped sweep and clean!
We had refreshments - including a decorate-your-own-birthday cupcake station, crafts (make your own mezuzah and make your own bookmark), we recognized our donors who were able to attend, and we hosted three families who were new to the community. It was a fun day. Adults and children left with books and one of our oversized Israel Trail games was checked out.
There are two book nooks, a smaller one in the sanctuary vestibule and a larger one downstairs in the multi-purpose room. We have books for everyone!
PJ Library sends free books to NRV Jewish families on a monthly basis. The BJCC is the local community partner for PJ Library. To date, we have served 107 children from 64 families. Currently there are 32 children from 24 families who are receiving books. Our families reside in Montgomery, Floyd, Pulaski, Giles and Craig counties and in Radford.
