Our senior METS group met on Thursday, May 14th to close out our 5th year. We celebrated the country’s 250th birthday with a patriotic themed program and meal. Pastor Ronnie gave a devotion honoring God and our service men and women. We had a wonderful slide show in memory of and honoring all our METS family members and friends who have served in the armed forces. We were then blessed with a selection of patriotic songs wonderfully performed by U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Robbie McMillian. We ended our time together with an all American meal of hot dogs, baked beans, chips, with apple pie and ice cream! We also delivered 11 meals to our METS shut-ins. We hope you will join us when we start our 6th year on Thursday, September 10! We’ve already got some great meals and activities planned!

Our METS seniors gathered Thursday and were blessed by a spring concert preformed by the La Crosse Elementary Chorus under the direction of Elizabeth Taylor. We feel very fortunate to be able to hear such beautiful music sung by such talented children. We also heard from Laurie Wright who talked about how she got into mission work as a young person, and how it led to leading mission activities such as Impact Mecklenburg and mission trips to Mexico with Yugo Ministries. She also talked about future mission opportunities available and how we can support them. After a delicious lunch and a selection of awesome desserts baked by some of our own seniors, we packaged up and delivered meals to our shut-ins. We are looking forward to our next gathering on May 14, 2026 when we will celebrate the 250th anniversary of our country.

The METS enjoyed venturing out on Wednesday to New Hope Valley Railway. There were no April Fool’s jokes, just a beautiful day to enjoy God’s creation thru nature. We took a short train ride thru the woods then returned to the station where we enjoyed learning about mail cars, baggage cars and touring the museum car. We then traveled back through Henderson and enjoyed a delicious lunch at The Pizza Inn. A great day of food, fellowship and fun!

We had another wonderful METS gathering with our seniors on Thursday! Kitty Basham shared a devotional about seasons in our lives and how God loves and cares for us during these seasons. Then we had a little fun playing Bingo before our special lunch prepared by guest chefs! We were blessed with a meal of spaghetti, salad, and bread prepared by Bruce Lynch and the Iron Man Men’s group from New Hope Baptist Church. On top of that we had delicious homemade cakes baked by Mae Jones and Beverley Jones. After we enjoyed all the delicious food we made 15 meals to deliver to our shut-ins. We hope you will join us next month on Thursday, April 16th at 11:00 to hear the LaCrosse Elementary chorus led by Elizabeth Taylor.

The METS held their February meeting last week with a theme - all about the heart -celebrating Valentine’s Day and heart health.
Steve Carroll challenged us to think about the influence and the opportunities we have to make a difference.
Dr . Paul Bailey gave an enlightening and entertaining talk on heart health and the importance of a heart healthy diet, limiting our portion size, and the more colorful our plate the better. Lots to take in and apply to our lifestyle. We enjoyed a delicious meal together and also sent meals to our shut-ins.
As a bonus, Wanda Bailey sang a beautiful song with Paul accompanying on the guitar. A blessing for all!
Our next meeting will be Thursday, March 12, 11:00-1:00. Please sign up or contact the church office to register. 434-636-2228 or [email protected].

We began the 2026 New Year with a wonderful devotion from Betty Woodlief on how we can feel "refreshed". Betty told us a story about a lady she met at Bojangles who had never heard about Jesus! Betty took advantage of the opportunity to talk with this lady and told her about Jesus! We then heard from Chief Michael Clark of the La Crosse Fire Department who spoke to us about fire safety in the home. We learned space heaters and lithium batteries are a big cause of home fires so don't leave them unattended. Also, as we know, smoke detectors are a must! We ended our afternoon with a good hearty lunch of chili, baked potato bar, cornbread, and cake! We had a wonderful time of fellowship over the meal. As always, we provided meals for many of our local shut-ins. We are so thankful for all who provide and support this ministry, both from our OBBC family and our friends from other churches.
We hope you'll signup to join us at our next gathering on Thursday, February 12, 2026, 11:00-1:00, where we will have another devotion, hear from Dr. Paul Bailey, and enjoy a meal together. To register, please call the church office at 434-636-2228; email us at [email protected]; sign up on the OBBC app or the sign.up sheet in the welcome center. We’d love to have you join us!

We had a wonderful gathering of our seniors this December! It began with a beautiful concert performed by the La Crosse Elementary Chorus under the direction of Elizabeth Taylor. They sang multiple Christmas songs all decked out in their Christmas stocking hats. We were also blessed by receiving Christmas cards they made for us. While listening to Wanda Bailey, who enthralled us with a fun devotion of the birth of Jesus (props and all), we made Christmas cards for the residents at Pine View Assisted Living Facility. After a delicious Christmas lunch we had a "cookie exchange" for dessert. Everyone brought their favorite homemade cookies and each of us was able to take home a goodie bag of assorted cookies. It was a sweet time of fellowship. To top things off we were able to put together 70 Christmas gift bags from all the toiletry items previously collected by the METS to deliver to Palmer Springs, Holly Haven, and Northview group homes. We also provided 15 meals for our shut-ins.

We kicked off the holiday season with a Thanksgiving lunch of turkey, dressing and all the trimmings right down to the pumpkin and pecan pies! Prior to the delicious food, we had a devotion from George Kidd on being thankful for all things, all year. We heard from Dana Debaets, Founder and Director of ARK Ministries, a private group home that offers a faith-based, Christ centered alternative for addiction recovery. A check for financial support was presented for their ministry from OBBC. As a service project we collected food for local food pantries and sent out 16 meals to local shut-ins. Our next meeting will be Thursday, December 11th and we hope you will join us to enjoy a Christmas concert performed by the La Crosse Elementary School Chorus under the direction of Elizabeth Taylor!

We had a fun filled afternoon at our METS gathering on Thursday at our first annual Senior Olympic Games! We kicked it off with a spirit-filled devotion given by Wanda Bailey on “running the race” taken from 1 Corinthians 9:24-27. We moved on to playing the games such as the Bucket Toss, Javelin Throw, Kleenex Pull, Balloon Volleyball, Checkers, Cup Ping, and more. Larry Griffin was the top athlete by winning 8 medals! We followed all this fun with a lunch of barbecue sandwiches, baked beans, coleslaw and apple cobbler with ice cream. We began sign-ups for our 1st outing of the year which will be Friday evening, December 19th where we’ll be going to dinner and then to McGregor Hall to see Plaid Tidings. The cost is $10. METS attendees may sign up at our next meeting on November 13th.
We also began collecting toiletries for our Christmas mission project and we sent out 15 meals to shut-ins.
Come join our fun. Call 434-636-2228 or email [email protected]. to register for our next meeting.

We had our first METS gathering Thursday to kick off our 5th year. Our largest group ever, totaling 53 attendees! Jan Vaughan shared a wonderful devotion with us. We then had an enlightened speaker, Jason Winter joined by his wife Melanie, of winternetweb.com. He gave us good information on internet safety, creating strong passwords, phishing schemes to avoid, Facebook hacks, and much more. To top it all off we had a delicious meal of chicken fingers, biscuits, sides and special dessert from JBJones! As part of our ongoing mission, we also provided meals for 12 shut-ins. May this small act of kindness remind them that they are loved by their OBBC family. Keep your eyes open for more information about upcoming service projects and events. October and November we will be collecting small toiletry items to make gift bags for our shut-ins and some local facilities. We hope you will join us next month on Thursday, October 9th, at 11:00 in the CLC to participate in the 1st METS Senior Olympic Games! It will be fun!!
