The grand story of God’s redeeming love begins and ends with a meal.
Read: Rev 19:1-16

Reflect: Food is amazing. Especially potatoes from the potato museum, but even more amazing is just how much the biblical writers include food into the stories of the bible. And when we look at the beginning and end of the bible we will find two meals. The first meal is an utter tragedy. Reading it stirs up so many emotions. When we hear Satan’s seducing lies whispering in the garden we shout, “Don’t listen!”, and when the fruit is taken we want to scream, “Don’t eat! Don’t eat it!” But they do. The first recorded meal in the bible is an act of complete disobedience against God’s good authority and loving provision. In this first bite sin enters their hearts, and its destruction is spread over the entire universe. This tragic meal’s effects are still felt today in humanity’s suffering.

But thankfully the story of redemption leads to another meal. The final meal is full of victory and love. Verse 9, “Blessed are those invited to the marriage feast of the Lamb!” Just imagine this scene in your mind. All of God’s people celebrating, the complete church united with the Lamb forever. This is our guarantee as children of God. This is scripture’s final meal. Sin has been defeated. No more rebellious meals. The eternal celebration has begun. Redemption accomplished. God has won!

Apply: A meal is how we will begin our eternity with our King. But for now who is someone that you could have a meal with and tell them about the joy you have in what’s to come? Invite another believer to find out their story of how the Lord has worked in their life. Meals are a great way to celebrate what God has done in the lives of his people. Invite someone out after your local Sunday gathering. Invite someone you’re not sure where they are at with God, a great question to ask during your meal, “Do you ever go to church?” and ask if you could pray for the meal and your time together.

Pray: Hallelujah! Indeed, Lord God Almighty–you reign! We rejoice and give you all the glory. We delight in the eternal marriage of church and bridegroom, our Lord Jesus Christ. Thank you for your power and your giving us your righteousness. You have clothed us with pure fine linen. Thank you for granting us life. In Jesus name, Amen.

We are assured that God sees, knows, and cares for us in our suffering.

Read: Ps 22:1-31

Reflect: When suffering comes we become susceptible to listening to the lies of the enemy. A few lies we hear: You are alone, your suffering is unique, God doesn’t love you, Where even is your God?, God has abandoned you and doesn’t keep his promises. Complete outright disgusting lies that we become vulnerable to. The enemy isn’t stupid, and he lures us to doubt because when we doubt God and his goodness we stop following him in faith.

Scripture never gives us a cookie cutter picture of life free of disappointments and heartaches. But that actually assures us that God sees and cares about what we are going through. He gives us hope in the middle of real world hardships. On the cross Jesus quotes Ps 22, and when we read the entire Psalm we begin to realize that Jesus is telling us this Psalm is about him. His suffering shows us that he is one with our suffering. Jesus willingly came to suffer, in order to purchase the guarantee that one day our suffering will be no more. As we suffer now, He is our comfort and hope.

Apply: Consider all the many ways God has helped and cared for you in hard times past. This can be a hard thing to do, so take a minute and look back and answer these questions, what was going on? How did it get resolved? What character qualities did you learn about God? ie: “God is….” Write down your answers so that you can look back and remember who God is even in the hard times.

Pray: O Lord, don’t be far from us! You are our help, and you quickly come to our aid! Just as the psalmist says, so do we. Thank you for seeing us in times of stress and coming to our rescue. Thank you Jesus for coming to earth and taking the suffering that we deserved. Thank you for rising for our everlasting life and joy. We pray in Jesus' name, Amen.

Jesus took every ounce of the Father’s judgement, for us.
Read: Matthew 27:45-54

Reflect: Matt 27 records one of the darkest and most terrible moments of suffering: Jesus hanging on a cross. The physical darkness on the earth pointed to just how spiritually dark a time it actually was on the cross. The pain Jesus experienced was horrible. The physical pain pointed to the unimaginable spiritual pain Jesus went through when he cried out, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” And at the same time this was a moment of glorious undeserved grace.

Jesus lived a perfect sinless life as our substitute. He hung there, willingly taking the punishment we deserved. He experienced total emotional and spiritual rejection and agony for our redemption. Jesus, as a man, hanging between heaven and earth, forsaken and alone. Rejected by humanity, and received our full just judgement from the Father. Jesus’ humanity endured the Father’s judgement and rejection so that the children of his grace never would. Jesus settled everything once and for all. His redeeming love for you will never be broken.

Apply: Have you ever felt rejected by God? Today’s passage gives us deep assurance that God will never reject anyone whose trust rests solely with Jesus. Today, let’s celebrate that we as children of God will never be rejected by God! We can rejoice in many ways: shouting, singing, praying and dancing. Take some time today and rejoice in what Christ has done for you.

Pray: Lovely God, we rejoice in the awesome work of our Savior. We cannot imagine the pain he suffered on behalf of his precious people. To endure such misery for our sake is still stunning. And yet God you did. We are eternally grateful. Thank you for defeating sin and granting forgiveness through your suffering, we pray in your holy name, Amen.

In the midst of torture and mockery Jesus displayed his divine power for us.
Read: Mark 15:19-32

Reflect: On the surface these final days leading up to the crucifixion really seem like defeat. A normal response to reading these verses for the first time could be: Where was Jesus’ power? Why did he just stand there and take the abuse? Some people there with Jesus looked on thinking this is not the Son of God, this is no promised Messiah. But we know that this wasn’t weakness at all. Jesus knew exactly what he was doing. No pain would cause him to abandon his substitutionary mission. Isaiah 53 shows us that Jesus’ response to the mockery and torture was actually him putting his identity on full display for all the world to see.

This was a display of redemptive victory and strength. He knew the glorious grace that was about to be unleashed onto the lost because of his suffering. He endured the torture and the mockery for you and me. Jesus’ power was made clear, and his power is our hope.

Apply: By the grace of God we have the same power displayed in Christ for we have become children of God. We authoritatively stand in both his power and victory. We can share the good news, we can let others know because of their sin they stand outside God’s kingdom, we can have hard conversations, we can tell others that our lives have been transformed, that our minds have changed, and we can do all this in the face of mockery and suffering. We are no longer condemned, for we rest in the arms of the Father knowing that he will make all things right in the end.

Pray: Thank you Father for the cross. Thank you for the Son’s victory over death, and Satan. Thank you for nailing our sin to that tree. May we find strength in the work of Jesus. Fill our souls with awe at the one who displayed ultimate victory by suffering for all those he draws to himself. We pray in your precious name, Amen.

Jesus willingly suffered rejection so that we might experience eternal acceptance.
Read: Luke 23:1-25

Reflect: Have you ever been embarrassed to be seen with someone? What about vice versa? It is a hurtful thing to be rejected by someone especially if it’s from someone you love. Like a child who doesn’t want to be seen with their parents. God designed us with a social intent, so we desire acceptance. We were made for one another, community. No one enjoys rejection. It doesn’t feel good being the outsider. Now enters Jesus. Fully human, he felt the same pain of rejection that we feel today. But Jesus was willing. He knew what he had come to do so that we would be eternally reconciled with our Creator.

This scene in Luke is wild, the crowd chose a violent criminal instead of the perfect eternal Son of God. Jesus’ public rejection was not a failure in God’s plan. It was God’s plan. This was a needed step towards Christ’s victory in his death on the cross as our substitute. No matter the pain, Jesus did everything necessary to accomplish his mission of redemption. His death for our life. His rejection for our eternal acceptance.

Apply: The acceptance of God in Christ Jesus is all the acceptance we will ever need. So instead of fearing being rejected by man, we can expect it, and trust that God is sufficient. I’d encourage each of us to consider what it would mean to more clearly live in the reality that Christ has been despised and rejected on our behalf. Let’s reorient our hearts towards God today by recognizing that in the face of rejection Christ chose us. And when we do that we ought to be propelled to love the people around us because God first loved us.

Pray: Righteous God, we know that because of our sin we deserved to be rejected by you. But we cling to the gospel of Jesus, who was rejected because of our sin, yet willingly gave his life for us. We thank you for this incredible news. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Jesus came to provide salvation through his suffering and death.

Read: Luke 22:31-62
Reflect: Redemptive restraint. The King of kings and Lord of lords submitted himself to human rejection, betrayal, and torture unto death. Even though he had the right, he did not defend himself. In his self-restraint he was exercising his divine power. He exercised holy restraint for the salvation of all who would believe.

Every single one of us would not have been able to do what Jesus did. We would all have failed. But Jesus knew the cross was his destiny, and he was willing. Jesus did not allow his disciples to act as his protection in his defense. He submitted to arrest and to all suffering that followed. This was a display of divine power not weakness. Jesus did not exercise his power to protect himself, and he did not let his disciples defend him, because he came to provide salvation through his suffering and death. Jesus was fulfilling every promise and every part of the plan of redemption, all for our salvation.

Apply: Jesus lived out perfect divine restraint for the worship and glory of God. He died so that we, his people, would live holy lives as he is holy for the worship and glory of God. And we are not alone, the Spirit of God dwells in us, we can obey God because of the work he’s done in us. So let’s do some self examination. Where do you need his divine restraint today? Let’s just think about our bodies. What thoughts need to be taken captive in your mind? What are you looking at with your eyes? Are the words that come out of your mouth full of gentleness and grace? Are you building up or using your hands for sin? Are your feet taking you down a path you ought not go? Take a moment and prepare your heart for things in your day. Anticipate them, and pray that God would help you walk in his righteousness.

Pray: Lord, there is nothing greater than the fact that Jesus would willingly go to the cross to redeem sinners such as us. We are so so grateful. We are stunned by your humility, by your power, by your submission to the plan of redemption, even unto death. We praise you for all that he has accomplished for my salvation. We thank you Jesus, we pray now in your name, Amen.

03/29/2026

The love that the Father has for the Son, is the love God has for us.

Read: John 17:1-26

Reflect: The desire to be loved is universal. No matter who or where people are, being loved is desired by all, humanity is united that way. We’ve been designed that way by our Creator. But sin has paired that desire of love with fear. Now we anxiously wonder are the people who say they love us, are they going to keep loving us? What If I mess up? Will they continue to be patient with me? And that’s just how we think about people. Now think if that’s God. Will his anger with our sin get in the way of his love? We get an incredible answer to all of these questions in the middle of John 17.

Jesus says to the Father, you “have loved them as you have loved me.” Wow. This statement is almost too much for our little brain to actually comprehend. It is such a rich statement we will be feasting and delighting in it all eternity. God the Father’s love for us is the same as his love for God the Son. The joy he has in the son is the same joy he has in us. The unshakable affection the Father has for the Son, he has for us.

Apply: Do you struggle with receiving love from others? What about love from God? We cannot fully understand God’s love for us by comparing it to human love. If you want to understand how much the Father loves you, meditate on how much love he has for the Son. Take time to reflect and consider the love the Father has for the Son, and you will grow in how much God loves you.
And think of all the ways God has loved you even today, let alone your life.

Pray: Almighty Lord, you faithfully hear the prayers of your people, what else could we pray other than what the Son prayed on the night he was betrayed? God we pray that we your people would become one, just as you the triune God are one. We pray that our neighbors around us would know the real Jesus and the love that sent him to earth. Thank you for your unending love for your people in Jesus. We pray in his sweet name, Amen.

Jesus is the fulfillment of Passover, because he is the Passover Lamb.
Read Matthew 26:14-29

Reflect: Exodus 12 is the first installment of the first Passover. It is God’s final act of deliverance for Israel out of slavery to Egypt. The Israelites would put the blood of the sacrificial lamb on their door posts, and as a sign of redeeming grace, God would PASS OVER those houses. Israel would live and be delivered out of slavery.

Now, Jesus is telling his disciples that not just the first Passover, but every Passover since then has been pointing towards himself. He wants his disciples to know that there is a greater slavery, way worse than physical slavery. Every heart of every person is a slave to sin. It is universal and inescapable. If sin is the greater slavery then there must also be a greater sacrificial lamb. Jesus is saying, “I am the final sacrificial Lamb, it is by my death that will break the power of sin, and give forgiveness to all who trust me.” The bad news is that every single one of us has been captured by sin, but the good news is that Jesus is the final Lamb, and in him we are no longer slaves but sons and daughters of the Most High God. We trust the Lamb.

Apply: How has Jesus set you free the sins of your life? Because Christ was raised from the dead we should walk in newness of life. What are some ways you can continue to walk in this new life you’ve been given in Word and Deed? Is there someone in your life that doesn’t know you’re a Christian? Make a plan to think about how you can share in grace what Christ has done in your life?

Pray: Lord, we confess that like Egypt we deserved death. We didn’t deserve to be spared, but we praise you for you are rich in mercy and passed over us, and have shown us love in Christ Jesus. Thank you for freeing us from slavery to sin because of Christ’s atoning death and resurrection. In his name we pray, Amen.

Grace is being given that which only God can give–a clean heart.

Read: Ps 51:1-19

Reflect: What a beautiful prayer of confession and repentance. This Psalm was written by David after he committed adultery and murder. No excuses, he does not minimize what he's done, or blame shift. He recognizes that his sin against others was actually sin directly against God himself. This is true confession.

This isn’t a temptation or behavior problem; this is a heart problem. David needs what only God can give–fogiveness that cleanses his heart. But look at the image David uses to describe how forgiveness came about, “let the bones you have crushed rejoice.” This is the hammer of grace, true repentance can often be painful that we might rejoice in the morning. In his redeeming love, God breaks things, even painfully, so that he would capture our hearts and worship. This Psalm should push us to ask, who was truly broken?

Jesus was broken, for you and me, for our sin. He was bruised and offered himself sacrificially that we could stand perfectly before God with a clean heart. Jesus is praying for you and me, right now. He will not stop until every speck of sin is removed from everyone of his children.

Apply: 1 John 1 tells us, “If we claim to be without sin” we are a liar. What is something in your life that you need to repent of? No excuses. No, “well it’s not that bad.” “It’s not even my fault.” Where do you need the cleansing forgiveness of God today? Who can you invite to hold you accountable that you would increase in your Christ likeness today and the days to come?

Pray: Father in Heaven, give us insight, that you might reveal our sin to us. Jesus, we don't want to stay there in denial, search our hearts, O God! We thank you for the confidence that all of our sins past, present, and future have all been completely wiped away because of the blood you split on the cross. Thank you for atoning your precious people once and for all. We can only come to your throne through Jesus, Amen.

Surrounded by death and grief, Jesus declares, “I am the resurrection and the life.”

Read: John 11:17-44

Reflect: The story of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead is one familiar to many people, Christian or otherwise. But look at the response of Martha. Honestly, her first words to Jesus are quite understandable as someone who was a firsthand eyewitness to the very power of Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother wouldn’t have died.” This situation is full of death and grief, but look at how our King responds, “Your brother will rise again.” Without hesitation, Jesus gives a completely clear and radical statement, but Martha misunderstands. She thinks he’s making a future promise, but Jesus is making a present declaration. He’s not talking about the future; he’s talking about what he is going to do right then and there to Lazarus. The Son of God is about to display the power at his disposal.

Jesus gloriously declares his identity in gospel summary, “I am the resurrection and the life.” Resurrection power and giving eternal life exclusively belong to Jesus alone. He then says, “Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live.” This is the gospel of grace, all people are born dead to sin, it is inescapable. By grace, Jesus breathes life into all who believe, and even though believers still die physically, we will rise and live with him forever.

Apply: Like Martha and Mary we all are faced with daily struggles, but Jesus speaks hope into their life. Throughout your day today, especially, when you’re confused, annoyed, down or frustrated, try reciting the words of our Lord in a declarative statement, “Jesus you are the resurrection and the life.” Just wait. In Exodus 14, Moses quite literally tells the Israelites to shut up, and wait on the Lord. Sometimes, like Mary and Martha, we need to quiet the noise, and remind ourselves of what’s true. Jesus is the resurrection and life and we are bound to eternal glory with him forever.

Pray: O God, we confess any angst or sin against you. We acknowledge that we truly only deserved death because of how we lived against you, our Creator. We bow to in gratefulness for the grace that you offered us in Christ. You breathed life into us, and promised us eternity with you. We praise you for your resurrection power! Thank you Jesus, we come to you in your name, Amen.
