Hey parents!
Last night we started a new series that will carry us through April. It was a lot of fun, and I think it helped to put some things into perspective for the students.
Our topic for last night was honor. We talked about the difference between honor and respect and used 1 Thessalonians 5:10-15 to guide our conversation.
We defined respect as showing consideration, courtesy, and care for someone or something. Respect is good because it teaches us things like manners and acceptable behavior.
The difference between respect and honor is that honor goes a bit deeper. Honor is more of a heart issue and recognizes a person’s worth. It reflects our appreciation of another person. The Bible says that both are important. (1 Thessalonians 5:12-13, 1 Peter 2:17)
This led into a discussion on how we can honor ourselves and others. We talked about what this means in regards to how we dress, how we treat others, and how speak to others and how we speak to and about ourselves. It’s very easy for us to point out our own flaws and shortcomings and to say things like, “I’m so stupid!”. This doesn’t bring honor to us or to God.
We used the scriptures in 1 Thessalonians as directions on how we can honor others including our peers, our family and those in leadership over us.
Please encourage your students this week to strive to honor one another this week. This is one way that God’s love becomes evident in our daily lives, and it is how others will see the light of Jesus in our students.
If you want to continue the conversation here are some follow-up questions:
1. What’s the difference between honor and respect?
2. Is it ok to not show honor to people you don’t like or don’t get along with?
3. There’s an old saying that claims that respect has to be earned. Do you agree or disagree with this?
4. What are some things you should start doing or stop doing immediately to either give or receive respect?
Have a blessed day!
