This is Rocket, a sweet little guy.
Many times over the last 36 years, I've snuck beloved family pets into places they weren't supposed to be, and this one time it was for my dear friend Mark, as I was bringing in his faithful friend, Rocket, to see Mark one last time, and say goodbye.
Nothing except Jesus loves us like our beloved pets. They also need and deserve to tell us goodbye, and not think we abandoned them.
Mark Montanes…ETB (Earnest T. Bass)…My great friend & brother from another mother…What can I say, other than the fact that all of us who knew Mark, loved him…& we greatly miss him & continue to pray for his beloved Betty Montanes & son Marco …I miss counting on him to laugh at all my jokes and add to them one of his own…I miss his prayers for me which always brought me to tears, when I called to pray for him! Knowing he was in a violent struggle to live each day…I miss his partnership with me in ministering to people, as he always wanted to know and pray for others in crisis with me…Mark gave me a vest with Looney Tunes characters on it, for me to remember him by when I minister to children…and not long ago I was called to minister to a little girl with a broken heart who tried to take her life…and before I walked into the home, I told Mark, “You and me buddy…We’re going to do this one together…We’re going to see this little girl’s broken heart and broken mind healed…” and with God’s wisdom and love, we did…and her great big heart and beautiful mind were healed in no time at all.
In all my years of ministry, I have never seen anyone fight for so long, so far beyond what their body is normally capable of against cancer…I could always feel his struggle on those days in my spirit/heart, and would call him to pray for him or in one incidence take him to the ER as I knew in my spirit he needed a blood infusion…and I was right, and God gave him more days to be with us…and more days to see some of his personal/family goals he wanted accomplished before he left.
I never will forget one morning when I came to get him and take him to chemo, that when I walked in the door he cried out, “Bill…Bill…is that really you?? I know it sounds weird but come over here, so I can touch you…” I did, and he told me to sit down because he needed to tell me something…He told me how he had a bad night and that this morning he heard a knock at the door, and when he went to the door there was two men in white robes and three white horses…One man was on his horse waiting, while the other man was at the door talking…and the man looked at Mark and said, “C’mon…let’s go…Let’s go home!” Instantly Mark knew these men were there to take him home to heaven…but he wasn’t ready to let go yet, so he told them to go on without him and that he would go later, but not now as he had things to do yet…things to finish…and with that the man mounted his horse and was gone…and then there was another knock on his door, and it was me! I sat there in awe and knew I was there to help Mark finish…to finish his hearts desires, his goals…and I, along with Betty, Marco and many others did.
The day Mark left us and crossed over, he was staying at the Claire House, a very beautiful and gracious place of care for those that are dying…a hospice home…One of the things I knew was that Mark for a couple of months had not seen his beloved Rocket, his beloved furry four footed family member.
So I told Betty, I felt like I needed to get Rocket and bring him to Mark..so they could love on each other one more time, and say goodbye, for now.
Mark was of course at his weakest and emaciated from.the chemo…Just a skeleton of who he was physically…Betty and Mark agreed, and I went to get him…When I picked him up, I told him that I was taking him to see Mark and Rocket got nervously excited…I carried Rocket into the building, and could barely hold him the moment he smelled his master! After preparing Mark for Rockets excitement by putting a blanket on him so he wouldn’t accidentally in his excitement tear Marks skin with his paws, Mark weakly called Rocket as I held him in the foyer…Immediately Rocket sprang to life as his ears instantly perked up and he leaped out of my arms and ran into Marks room! At 1st Rocket nervously looked at Mark, not recognizing him, as Mark was a skeleton of his physical form that Rocket had always known…I pulled up a chair next to Mark and held Rocket towards Mark to smell him…and then it registered…This is his beloved Master, and what we were afraid of never happened…as Rocket was slow and gentle with Mark…and happily but compassionately licked Mark and then nestled in his lap…Now both Mark and Rocket were happy…It had been a long time since I had seen Mark smile such a genuine happy smile from ear to ear.
When I performed Mark’s life celebration service, we all told many stories and laughed and cried together…as we began to heal, just as Mark was enjoying perfect health and youth on the other side…waiting for us…ready to call to us when we come to that door, to exit life ourselves…I told this story at Marks service, and couldn’t help but compare it to how Jesus is on the other side, and how one day we too, just like Rocket, will excitedly and nervously run through that door to see our master, our Lord & Savior Jesus…when He calls our name.
Just like with Rocket & Mark…our relationship with Jesus is one of love, fellowship and family…and thank God, because of Jesus, that love, fellowship and family is eternal…Amen…as one day, we will be able to pick up where we left off in this life with those we love…Amen…A great day…A great reunion to look forward to..Amen!
Shalom!
Jesus is Lord!
