Pentecost is not simply the remembrance of a moment in the Book of Acts that led to the birth of the church — it is the unveiling of a new reality in human history.
Fifty days after Easter, faithful Jews had gathered in Jerusalem for the ancient Festival of Weeks (Shavuot), a harvest celebration commemorating God’s covenant faithfulness and the giving of the Law at Sinai. Yet in Acts 2, God does something astonishing: the Law once written on tablets of stone is now written upon human hearts through the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Wind fills the house. Fire rests upon ordinary people. Languages divide no more. Heaven and earth meet in a new way.
Pentecost is the reversal of Babel (Genesis 11). At Babel, humanity’s pride fractured the nations into confusion. At Pentecost, the Spirit gathers the nations back together through the crucified and risen Christ. The Church is born not as a human institution, but as a Spirit-breathed people sent into the world bearing witness to Jesus.
For over 2,000 years, the Church has stood in this Pentecost reality — through persecution, revival, reform, renewal, migration, mission, and global awakening. From Jerusalem to Africa, Europe, Asia, Latin America, and beyond, the fire has never gone out. The Spirit continues to call, gather, enlighten, and send the people of God into every generation.
This is why Acts 1:8 remains so central to who we are at Charity: “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you; and you will be my witnesses…” Pentecost reminds us that the Church does not exist merely to preserve tradition, but to participate in God’s ongoing mission of redemption in the world.
This Sunday, we invite everyone to wear RED — the historic color of Pentecost, symbolizing the fire of the Holy Spirit. Come ready to worship. Come expectant. The same Spirit that moved in the upper room is still moving today.
