pal Church first met in front of the home of Dr. Thomas A.J. Dr. John A.B. Wilson used the porch as his pulpit and preached to the faithful in the front yard. The large turnout encouraged Dr. Wilson to pursue the idea of building a church in Bishopville. Along with nine Trustees, the dream became reality. In 1883, Wilson Methodist Episcopal Church was built at a cost of $23,000 on one acre of land purchased from Dr. Holloway for one hundred dollars. The groundbreaking and cornerstone were laid on October 11, 1883 by Rev. Dr. Wilson, whom the church was named after due to his inspiration and effort. There were 25 members, nine men and sixteen women. Revivals swept the community and many new members joined. By February 1884, the Church was debt free and a dedication service was held. In 1933, the 50th anniversary of the church was celebrated during the pastorate of Rev. Powell. The church was incorporated in February of 1953 during the pastorate of Rev. Irvin Collins as plans were made for additional space to accommodate the growing congregation. The church was dedicated on December 7, 1953 and was debt-free. William and Irma Young left a large legacy to Wilson Church in 1981 and the original building was remodeled and an educational unit added. The 100th year anniversary was held October 23, 1983. A groundbreaking ceremony was held on December 6, 1987 for the Young Memorial Building. This building is currently used as our Fellowship Hall. In 2021, Wilson Church began the process of disaffiliating from the United Methodist Church and after meeting all of the requirements set forth by the United Methodist Church, our petition to disaffiliate was approved and became effective on September 15, 2023.
