This Sunday is Family Commissioning at Immanuel 🤍

We will have the joy of coming alongside these families as they commit to faithfully teach and model the gospel in their homes.

But they are not making that commitment alone.

As the family of Immanuel, we are making a commitment too. To pray. To encourage. To disciple. To know these children and invest in their lives as they grow.

Family Commissioning is a reminder that the next generation is not simply something we care about. They are part of our church family, and we have the privilege of helping point them to Jesus.

We hope you will join us Sunday at 10:30 as we celebrate these families and make that commitment together.

If your family needs an updated picture for the church directory, come a few minutes early and we’ll get it taken care of. We’ll also be taking pictures during and after the gathering.

No elaborate family photo planning required. Just come as you are, find the camera (Jessica Morales will be taking photos), and give us your best Sunday morning smile 😄

As we make our way through the book of Acts, we are seeing again and again what it looks like for God’s people to live as the church.

These four fundamental commitments give us a framework for thinking about who we are, what we value, and how we want to live together as the body of Christ.

Joseph shares a little more about each one and where we are headed as we continue studying Acts together.

In 2018, the Gibbons family spent six weeks in Poland as they completed the adoption of their daughter. When they finally returned home to Birmingham, their Immanuel Church family was waiting for them at the airport.

They welcomed them quietly, knowing the newest member of their family didn't speak English and could easily become overwhelmed by noise. They stocked the fridge, cleaned the house, helped with childcare, and had already walked alongside the Gibbons through years of waiting and disappointment in their adoption journey.

On Sunday, Logan shared this story as a picture of what it means for the Church to become family.

Acts 2 shows us a people devoted to fellowship, sharing life and caring for one another. Sometimes that looks like gathering around a table. Sometimes it looks like meeting a practical need. And sometimes it looks like standing quietly in an airport, ready to welcome a family home.

Raisins in toothpaste probably weren’t where you expected a sermon on Pentecost to begin. But somehow, it worked.

A very memorable April Fools’ prank left Brandon’s family confused and looking for an explanation. In Acts 2, the crowd found themselves asking a much bigger version of the same question: What does this mean?

Peter’s answer pointed them to Scripture, to the finished work of Jesus, and to the promised Holy Spirit.

And his example gives us a simple reminder for our own lives:
Remain faithful.
Proclaim Christ
Trust the Holy Spirit to work.
