CELEBRATE HOPE was cancelled last week due to weather, but we’re excited to be back together this Wednesday night and to have Aleta Garrison join us again!

You may remember in her story, from two weeks ago, the elements of trauma and hardship. But the Lord has been gracious to redeem those situations in Aleta’s life by helping bring awareness, relief, and practical ways to care for others.

Aleta will share how we can care for others in our community who may have a similar story to hers.

Please join us at 6 p.m. for a free dinner, lesson from Aleta, and then small groups.

CELEBRATE HOPE returns tonight, Wednesday, January 10, at 6 p.m. We will begin with dinner, followed by a large group time, then small groups.

Growing up in a trauma-filled home as a child Aleta Garrison will share her experiences of how God has helped her move past her trauma and how she is using her experiences to impact the lives of students at Shades Valley High School where she has been a teacher for the last 24 years.

Aleta has been a member of Hope Community for 22 years, beginning when it was still McElwain Baptist. She has been married to Craig for 27 years and they have three children Wil, Clayton and Abbi. She will be welcoming a new daughter-in-law to her family this year as Wil marries the love of his life, Aletheia Sanders.

On January 10th, Aleta will be sharing her story and then will be joining us again on the 17th to offer practical tips on how to support those recovering from traumatic situations.

Join us tonight at 6 p.m. for CELEBRATE HOPE!

Ava Perego will lead a discussion on Hope for the Holidays. The holidays often have us confronting broken relationships - What does it look like to grieve those who are still living? How does sin impact relationships with those we love. Though a joyous season, celebrating the holidays can be difficult for many reasons, such as being reminded of all those we used to celebrate with, but no longer do for a variety of reasons. Let’s prepare to discover the hope that remains amid our sorrow for those we love but may no longer know.

Ava is originally from Baton Rouge, LA (Geaux Tigers) and received a B.A. in Journalism from Louisiana State University. She currently attends Beeson Divinity School in Birmingham, AL and will graduate with a Master of Divinity and Missions Certificate on December 1st. She is deeply passionate about theological education and loves teaching and preaching. In her free time, you’ll find her painting, enjoying nature or on a spontaneous adventure: that could include anything from flying across the world to ending up on a tv show set with only a few hours’ notice. She is so grateful for the Lord’s grace in her life and the kindness He has shown toward her.

Before we hear from Ava, we will eat dinner at 6 pm and start programming promptly at 6:20 pm. The theme for dinner this week is tailgate, and to stay on theme, team colors and gear are encouraged.

Jeff is leading worship this week. After Ava presents, we will go to small groups. We have a men’s, women’s, and 12-step group. Childcare is provided from 6 pm to 7:30 pm.

Join us Wednesday, November 8, at 6 p.m. for CELEBRATE HOPE. We'll share a meal together (chicken spaghetti), followed by large group time with Jessica leading worship and Fran Phillips speaking.

Fran grew up in the McElwain community and was baptized in the chapel across the road at the age of eight, along with her younger brother, Tommy. Fran was studying nursing at the University of Alabama when Richard asked her to marry him - and they were married at McElwain 60 years ago.

Fran completed her nursing education and went on to have a successful career caring for those in her charge.
At one point though, she found herself providing care for a patient she never thought she’d have to be caring for - her brother. Fran will share her story of loving someone who is part of the gay community, even when it is unpopular and even deemed unsafe.

Join us for this story of serving others well, and faithfully loving someone in suffering, despite opposition and disagreement. After Fran presents, we will go to small groups. We have a men’s, women’s, and 12-step group. Childcare is provided from 6 pm to 7:30 pm.

Join us Wednesday night, November 1, at 6 pm for CELEBRATE HOPE. We’ll share a meal (taco soup) then begin large group time at 6:20, followed by small groups- women’s group, men’s group, and the 12-step group.

Our pastor, Jacob Simmons, will facilitate a conversation that the (greater) church has been either ignoring or overly supportive of. It’s one that is conflicting to many and offensive to others. Some just embrace it as “times are changing”…

We’re going to engage in a discussion about what the Bible says about the LGBTQ+ Community. This will be a great opportunity to process loving others despite conflicting worldviews and the continual argument of Welcoming vs. Affirming in the modern day church.

This is a sensitive topic because it’s conflicting. We want to love others well, but sometimes we disagree with how they live or what they believe.

Come with open hearts and with questions prepared. Know that Jacob may not have all the answers and some in the room may disagree with what is shared.

Please keep in mind, we don’t save people or change their minds. We’re here to bring people to know who Jesus is, and the Holy Spirit is the one in control of how the message is received.

Tomorrow night, Wednesday, October 25, is CELEBRATE HOPE, at Hope Community Church. We'll meet at 6 p.m. with dinner, followed by large group at 6:20 and small groups after that. We have a men’s, women’s, and 12-step group. Childcare is provided from 6 pm to 7:30 pm.

This week we get to hear from our fearless leader, Joel Winget. Joel is a member at Hope and holds a BS and MA in two different studies of psychology (focuses on motivation. Behavior, and interpersonal dynamics).

Joel will talk about how difficult it can be to make new friends - especially as an adult. Just think about how you might be lonely, and someone else right by you may be feeling the exact same way - but you’d never know. Imagine if you opted to reach out, you’ve made a new friend, and then the course of each of your lives has been impacted.

Let’s take it a step farther and think about how we can build friendships that lead people to an initial or more intimate understanding of who Jesus is.

Bring a friend and we can’t wait to see you on Wednesday!

Join us Wednesday night at 6 pm for CELEBRATE HOPE!

According to The Pew Research Center, over 7 million Christians in the US experience major depression each year. This reality compels the Church to acknowledge its presence in our congregations and provide help to church members who are struggling.

Join Logan Heim as she shares her experience with depression and discusses how the Church can be a place of empathy, compassion, and support for those overwhelmed by darkness and distress.

Logan has been a member at Hope Community since its beginning. You’ll often find her onstage on Sunday mornings singing with the worship team. In her free time she enjoys traveling, reading, and spoiling her dogs London and Irwin.

Tonight, October 4, Mike Reese will facilitate a discussion on addiction, something he is too familiar with.

At 14 years old, Mike had his first encounter with alcohol which led to 30+ years of functioning alcoholism. On March 7th 2002, Jesus pulled him from the quagmire of life and graced him with the opportunity to begin healing from his addiction. Now, the Lord blesses Mike with the chance to help others with addiction.

Mike has been an active member at McElwain/ Hope, and he has led Celebrate Recovery for many years. In 5th grade he took a musical aptitude test Which revealed talent that led to a career in piano technology. He’s a loving father, grandfather, and great grandfather.
