O Lord,
At the beginning of this day, something about the morning gives us a glimpse of your fidelity.
As we rise, even before the fog clears from our newly-awakened minds, there you are –
just as you always have been: Constant. Steadfast. Secure.
You, o you, who – as you always do – walks us through the night, and unto the morning.
Because, O Dawn Treader, there have been many nights where we have tossed and turned. Too often the night has been filled with the “worst case” scenarios. We have feared for our security, our safety, our satisfaction. In those night hours, our hearts have been burdened by the “what if’s” –
What if this doesn’t work out?
What if I don’t have enough to give?
What if this is really what they think it is?
What if this isn’t where I’m meant to be?
And in our evening wrestling and doubt, we have been tempted to look away from you. Our minds have easily been fixated on the places and people that make us feel least alive, least in control, least attuned to grace. And so often it is our worry, not you, that is sovereign in our lives. Worry will never fill our cup.
But not in the morning. Because you are there in watchfulness as we sleep, and here you are as we awake – and we are glad. And in your nearness, not even the worst of what makes us toss and turn will even get the best of us.
So here at the dawn, O Light Bringer, give our bodies rest from the tension they have carried. Permeate every troubled place we can name. When we have been too distracted by the things we cannot change, help us to look up and see the morning’s light. And at the morning, make us ready, again, to be your people.
Because we begin this day in joy, in hope, and because of your presence, we begin this day with deep gladness.
Amen.
