Faith in Action Alabama has launched a statewide sign-on letter calling on our elected leaders to eliminate Alabama’s three Confederate holidays: Jefferson Davis Day, Robert E. Lee Day, and Confederate Memorial Day.

These holidays reflect a past rooted in slavery and division. Many across our state believe it’s time for Alabama to move forward in a way that reflects justice, dignity, and unity.

This letter will be delivered directly to state leadership on June 18th. The goal is simple: show how many people across Alabama are ready for change.

This effort is also connected to the People’s Agenda Campaign, which focuses on:
• Thriving public school systems
• Investment in low- and moderate-income communities
• A just state justice system

As Alabama observes Confederate Memorial Day, our Unitarian Universalist values call us to witness a different truth. We believe that public spaces and state holidays should reflect the shared values of an inclusive community—not an ideology of racial oppression.

Our UU ancestors, like Rev. James Reeb and Viola Liuzzo, gave their lives in Alabama to dismantle white supremacy during the Civil Rights Movement.

Today, we honor that legacy by standing alongside clergy and leaders of the Alabama Faith in Action Interfaith Council to proclaim that honoring a regime built to preserve slavery and racial hierarchy is incompatible with modern values of equality and freedom.
