Religious Life at BSC

Religious Life at BSC We suggest students subscribe via SMS to receive updates on Religious Life activities! Mostly informational, never *too* serious.

This page is intended as a forum for all things religious (dialogue and action) at BSC. Share if you have an opportunity or question that is on your mind. Religious life at Birmingham-Southern exists to support and enrich the education the College offers. As a historically United Methodist college, Birmingham-Southern has a Christian chapel in the heart of campus, a United Methodist chaplain, a Un

ited Methodist campus ministry, and strong ties to the Church—whose North Alabama Conference headquarters is located on the campus. At the same time, the College does not require students to attend chapel nor mandate doctrinal uniformity among its faculty. Perhaps B-SC’s particular contribution today is to encourage students of various religions and no religion together to wrestle with questions of meaning, purpose, and vocation in a religious climate that is open and diverse. Happy Sukkot! 🍃

Sukkot commemorates the years that the Jews spent in the desert on their way to the Promised Land & celebrates the way in which God protected them under difficult desert conditions.

A Sukkah is a hut-like structure that symbolizes all the time Israelites spent in the wilderness after they were freed from slavery in Egypt.

Today challenged fellow students in sukkah building. And we’re impressed! 👏

Happy Halloween from our spooky crew! 👻 We had the best time spreading some joy to people in the community yesterday for one of BSC’s favorite tradition, Halloween on the Hilltop.

It may be June but that doesn’t mean we can’t keep celebrating our Class of 2020 amiright?! ⁣

“Looking back, freshman year me had a lot of growing to do...but now I feel confident in who I am.” reflects on her time at BSC & her role within our leadership team.

Eliza Love came to Birmingham from the great state of Kentucky & found herself in a unique community with beautiful & different faith expressions. ⁣

Tune in as she recalls her time at BSC in search of conversation, coffee & chocolate while visiting Norton 120.

Cheers to our Religious Life Seniors! 🥂⁣

We have enjoyed being a part of your time here at BSC & pray that you’ve grown in your faith. ⁣

We challenge you to continue learning & pursuing what sets your soul on fire. ⁣

Emily Farley admits to being skeptical when Chaplain Julie casually invited her to Norton 120 for coffee as a freshman, but now treasures the time spent in that space.⁣

She mentions that Religious Life at BSC allows students to be themselves, whether that’s complaining about your day or celebrating small victories. ⁣

Thank you Emily for taking advantage of this community at BSC & we hope you feel welcomed too!

Jadaria Thomas reminds us to “show yourself some grace...a whole lotta grace actually.” She also encourages students to celebrate the minor things! ⁣

Watch her video to hear more from this hardworking BSC senior.

We made this video for those who aren’t on the Hilltop this year for finals week. It’s our chaplain, Julie’s infamous smooshie pie how to video that will allow you to make your own delicious treat at home.⁣

Enjoy! *Sharing with family not required, but encouraged.🤗

Chaplain Julie recaps last Monday night’s chapel where she talked about Job & how everything was stripped away from him...much like it’s been here for us lately. ⁣
⁣⁣
Right now we’re being forced to admit that we’re not ok. It’s hard to pretend that all is well & we’re struggling with that “highlight reel” on social media. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Barbara Brown Taylor once wrote, “Pain landed you flat in bed giving you time to notice things you never slowed down to notice before.” (An Altar in the World)⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Julie shares a list of needs she’s discovered during this time & encourages you to do the same. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
So let’s slow down & practice being honest with each other. We’re all in this together.

To know him, is to love him. Noah Glover ‘19 led worship in the Chapel many times & today he’s making a guest appearance on our IGTV channel. Taking us all to “country church” & reminding us to have hope during this time of uncertainty.

This Passover will be more like that first Passover than any other most of us have celebrated. The majority of us — the lucky ones — are shut into our own homes while a plague swirls outside. And the night feels like it might never end. The endless posts, articles, notifications — these are like the cries of the Egyptians all around us. But we can’t really expect redemption at dawn. Coronavirus will still be here Thursday morning.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Yet the Passover seder teaches us to hold faith. Like our ancestors, we can expect this difficult period to pass. We’re not as close to the end of this road as they were, but one day there will be better treatments, a vaccine, herd immunity. One day, we will experience redemption — again. | Words from Rachel Scheinerman found on myjewishlearning.com ⁣⁣

We wish you a happy & healthy Passover as you gather with your family. May faith & actions bring comfort & healing for all. ⁣
