On January 1, 1863, President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation went into effect. This war time proclamation freed all enslaved people living in the states in rebellion, during the Civil War. Unfortunately, this proclamation didn’t apply to enslaved individuals in the border states or in the northern states. Those persons would be freed until passage of the 13th Amendment in January of 1865.

On June 19th, 1865 - 2years after Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, and 5 months after passage of the 13th Amendment, Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Texas to read "General Order No. 3," finally enforcing the freedom of 250,000 enslaved Black Texans.

Today, 163 years after Lincoln’s proclamation, 161 years after passing the 13th Amendment, the sons and daughters of those who endured the brutal inhumanity of chattel slavery in this yet to be United States of America, pause to reflect.

The delays are still there. There are still some who benefit, while others still toil. There are still many who don’t know of the freedom they possess. Yet we pause, and reflect, because it is right that we do so.

☀️Summer in the Psalms ☀️starts this Sunday, June 7th — and we want you ready.

We’re spending 13 weeks this summer in the “Psalms of Encouragement”. Not a feel-good series for people who are already feeling good. A series for people who know what it costs to keep going.

We start in Psalm 63 — David’s desert song. Written when he had lost everything, and he still opens with “You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you.” That’s not performance. That’s reaching for the only thing that can actually help.
