It is with deep sorrow that I tell you that my sweet husband, Chaplain John David Murphy, III passed from this life on July 4, 2024. He is now healed and safely in the arms of his Savior Jesus Christ. I treasure the gift of being his best friend, wife and ministry partner for the 9 years since God brought him into my life. Services are Tuesday at Noon at the chapel of Briarwood Presbyterian Church and burial with military honors at Montevallo National Cemetery at 2:00 pm. Obituary is on Currie Jefferson Funeral Home website.

UPDATE NEWSLETTER—WINTER 2022-23 CADENCE CALL MINISTRIES

The last three years at Cadence Call Ministries have provided challenges, redirection and great vision. Let me recap a bit.

2021—THE YEAR OF COVID—Losing our access to prison (Prison Fellowship Ministries at Bibb Correctional) due to the COVID lockdown, I redirected our ministry to helping those who were transitioning out of prison. I provided chaplaincy services, group and personal Bible Study and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy at Alliance Reentry Center in Bessemer. During this year we were approached by a gentleman who was referred to me because of my area of work to help set up a program for men who had just been sentenced to long prison terms (or waiting for sentencing which was expected to be long term) as an alternative to prison. His vision was to involve a very intense effort to change the thinking patterns of those with patterns of incarceration. My task was to develop the curriculum, assemble the facilitators team and provide onsite oversight of the program. During September of 2021 I caught COVID-19 Delta Variant and was in the in the hospital for 21 days, on oxygen for an additional month and had a long recuperation period. In addition, because of Chronic Kidney Disease, I was put on hemodialysis, had to have 2 surgeries for an access port and had to go to Veterans Administration Hospital three days a week for dialysis. During recuperation, hemodialysis and oxygen therapy, I continued to plan for this new program called Forward to Freedom with its visionaries and administration. I worked at the program site 3 days a week through my health difficulties with the exception of when I was hospitalized. Cadence Call Ministries developed a partnership with Forward to Freedom of Alabama and we put plans in place to accept participants in early 2022.

2022—THE YEAR OF FORWARDD TO FREEDOM—
After months of planning and acquiring facilitators, we began with our first Forward to Freedom group of 6 men on April 2022. The men were selected by Judge Pulliam based on her experience with them. The curriculum and leadership fit together beautifully to provide a great program for these men. Forward to Freedom is a faith based Christian program of intense coursework and counseling and includes the requirement of the participants going as a group to a local church each Sunday morning in addition to their daily class time. Of course, there were some hiccups. We had two men to leave the program and made note of improvements that would be beneficial to the program. This first group graduated on July 29, 2022. What had originally been intended to be a 180 day program became a 90 day program. The participants had jobs when they graduated and had continuing contact with the mentors for a time.
The second Forward to Freedom group began September 19, 2022, and graduated on December 14, 2022. Improvements were made in the program and we could see the positive effect on the participants. This group started with 7, of which 4 graduated.
During the first two groups we had two men get baptized and several others accepted Christ.
One of the major things we added to our program during the end of the first group and continued through the second group was Neurofeedback. The goal of neurofeedback is to physically renew the brain by redirecting neurons from their injured condition to the way they were created to function. It has been very beneficial to our participants. Unfortunately, we have had to drop this aspect of our program in 2023 because of funding constraints.
Personally, in August of 2022 I transitioned from hemodialysis to peritoneal dialysis. This form is much easier on the body and it is done at home while I relax or sleep. It is done 6 nights a week for 10 hours, so planning is necessary, but I can keep an almost normal work schedule with PD. I feel better and my energy level is much better. This allows me to be personally involved in the Forward to Freedom program five to six days a week.

2023—CONTINUED EXPANSION AND PROGRESS
In 2023 we moved our resident facility from ARC Reentry Centers to Shepherd’s Fold which is located between Bessemer and Homewood. This provides us with more room, lower fees and a very cooperative residence staff.
On January 25 we received our third group of men to go through the Forward to Freedom program. Ten men were sent to us by Judge Pulliam. These ten men appear to be better vetted for our program and all had clear drug tests on day one. Other groups have had active addictions we have tried to help them overcome. Additionally, this group is eager to learn and eager to benefit fully from our program. They regularly thank us for what we do for them through this program. Please pray for each of them to keep their eyes and minds focused and to complete the program without any hiccups. We had one leave the program last week, leaving us nine.
We have maintained our excellent facilitator staff with little change and Sgt Major Jerry McClain has become the Operations Director for Forward to Freedom. Facilitators include Jerry McClain, John Murphy, Willie Holmes, Allen “Thunder” Scott and Eddie Burchfield. Each teaches one day a week and “Thunder” commutes from Huntsville.
Our structure is a bit different with this group in that they breakfast, exercise and a Bible Study in the early mornings. Regular classes begin at 10:30 am and run until 2:30 pm. They have a break until 3:00 pm at which time they start with our new Literacy Program from 3:00 pm until 5:00 pm on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. On Mondays during this time period they have Financial Management and on Fridays they have group counseling. We will be adding additional counseling soon. We are continuing to require Sunday church attendance and my wife, Anita, and I accompany them each Sunday.
Regarding the Literacy Initiative, Central Alabama Literacy Council’s Steve Hannum has partnered with Cadence Call Ministries to provide reading and comprehension lessons to get all of our Forward to Freedom participants up to a level where they can function well in society and in the job market. We are also addressing Math Proficiency issues. We are working to try to get all of them a GED, Job Skills Certifications and other training that will help them get and maintain a job. This initiative is going well and the participants are realizing how much they are gaining from this program. Starting February 23, we introduced the participants to a writing initiative that they will be doing on Thursday afternoons. Indiana Prison Writers Workshop has shown great success in Indiana and is now spreading its work to Alabama. Our current Forward to Freedom group is the first men’s group outside Indiana to have the privilege of benefiting from this program. This will help them a great deal in learning to communicate effectively.
Moving forward, our plan is to have two groups in our program at the same time. As Group 3 (our current 90 day intense learning group) progresses to Phase 2 (a second 90 days) with jobs and continued coursework, we intend to start Goup 4. As Group 4 progresses to Phase 2 we will start Group 5.
We are also collecting data in several areas in pre and post assessments. We will be studying these to provide data for progress in values, character, biblical literacy, corrective thinking, “authentic manhood”, educational progress and certifications.
On a personal note, we are healthy, happy and very active in many aspects of ministry and in preparation for enhancing our programs. Anita and I are attending leadership training for Celebrate Recovery. Most of the men who get into our program have a history of addiction, if not active addiction. In addition, most have severe trauma that needs to be dealt with. Celebrate Recovery should be very helpful to them and we plan to be equipped to lead by early 2024, if not before. CR is designed to not only deal with addictions, but also with hurts, habits and hang-ups, which often lead to addictions and dysfunction.
Anita and I are also enrolled in Hebraic Institute. Our current class is called Messiah Mosaic and links Old Testament passages and concepts to Jesus, the Messiah of the New Testament. Our classes at Hebraic Institute have been very enlightening and have deepened our understanding of the Bible and deepened our faith.
People ask us what are our needs and the needs of our participants. Of course, the first and most important need is prayer. Please pray for our participants to focus their thinking on creating a new life for themselves, thinking biblically and developing the self-discipline necessary to live a life that will be beneficial to themselves and a positive and contributing model for their families and community. Pray that all will surrender their lives to Jesus. Pray for us as we minister—that we would stay healthy, would be sensitive to the Holy Spirit and the needs of these participants and others who need our help.
The participants’ physical needs are mostly met by our Forward to freedom partner who pays for their residence fees for the first 3 months as well as outside activities for the participants. We could always use men’s clothes, shoes, toiletries, etc. or Wal-Mart Gift Cards to cover such items. We also need monies to cover the materials the participants use in our program. They are expensive, but well worth it. These would be tax deductible donations to Cadence Call Ministries.
Cadence Call Ministries needs financial support to cover the cost of our contributions to this effort—time, gas money, auto repairs, tires, continuing education, networking and a salary and retirement program for me as Executive Director of Cadence Call Ministries. We are also helping other individuals by counseling, providing transportation and making referrals for their specific needs (some of which we underwrite and are very costly). We need a “slush fund” to enable us to help others as they come to us.
If you know of someone who would like to donate an automobile to Cadence Call Ministries they would get a tax write-off for the value of the auto. We need vehicles for our personal use in the ministries, for us to provide (sell) to the participants during Phase 2 of our program or to sell to others to provide funds for our ministries.
We are constantly getting inquiries from others who ask us to assist, train or set up ministries that are out of Birmingham. We had two just last week. We would like to be able to duplicate the programs we are doing in other areas, but it takes capital to make that happen. We would appreciate your contributions or your referring others to us who might want to financially help underwrite this much needed work.
We so appreciate your interest, prayers, support and encouragement as we at Cadence Call Ministries take the corrective thinking process and Biblical values to those who need it most.

This week at Cadence Call Ministries:

Monday John, me (Anita Murphy) and Pastor Jesse Leonard (ret military) went to Tuscaloosa to check out two houses that we will be overseeing that will house veterans who are struggling. Pastor Leonard’s wife, a retired Colonel, will also be helping with this program. One home is ready to receive residents and the other is being remodeled. One will house up to 20 men and the other will house up to 7 women. Both homes are in great shape and in very good neighborhoods. The veterans will be matched with a job and will also do coursework and have counseling to help them get into positive life patterns. We have received an application from our first veteran.
After checking out the houses, we met with a veteran coordinator who works primarily with homeless vets. She indicated that they are excited to have these facilities available to them. We are receiving referrals from them as well as Vet Court, other organizational sources as well as the general public. We often receive calls from family members of those who might qualify for our programs.
Wednesday we did reading assessments on 4 men at ARC Reentry Center in Bessemer who want help with their reading. We are partnering with the Literacy Council of Alabama and I will be actively involved.
The rest of the week was spent evaluating the results of Phase 1 of the Forward to Freedom Project for which we provided the curriculum, counseling snd facilitators, making plans for a second Phase 1 of Forward to Freedom, continuing to encourage, support and counsel the Phase 1 FTF graduates and plan for all aspects of the Veterans project in Tuscaloosa for which we will be developing curriculum, counseling and facilitating coursework as well as providing spiritual guidance.

Please pray for us in all these endeavors, for our health, for our partners and facilitators and for financial support so we can provide those we serve with the best materials and services possible.

This is an update from Chaplain John Murphy and Anita Dutton Murphy to update you regarding the status and activities of Cadence Call Ministries as a partner of the Forward to Freedom Project and some other matters.

First, let me say that we are excited that we had four young men who were trusted to our care graduated from Phase 1 of the Forward to Freedom Project Friday, July 29, 2022 at Judge Pulliam's office at the Jefferson County Courthouse. Leaders of Forward to Freedom, Cadence Call Ministries and Alliance Reentry Centers were present as well as facilitators who have worked with them these 90 days of Phase I. Also in attendance were the attorneys for our four graduates and a representative from the District Attorney's office. All spoke glowingly of the progress of the young men and of the Forward to Freedom Program itself. Our Graduates also had the opportunity to express their appreciation to Judge Pulliam and those involved with the Forward To Freedom Project for providing them with this great opportunity to change their life trajectory. Reportedly, Judge Pulliam is extremely pleased with the results of our program. We at Cadence Call Ministries were so thankful to have been given the responsibility of pulling together the instructional program, providing Biblical Counseling, providing, coordinating and occasionally filling in for facilitators for the instructional program. We also met these men at church every Sunday of Phase I to further support their spiritual development and attempt to get them attached to a viable faith community. John was humbled to be asked to baptize two of the men. Kudos to Mark Jenkins and Forward to Freedom for putting this celebration together with Judge Pulliam to recognize these young men and how they have progressed through the program. We want to express deep thanks to those who volunteered to facilitate groups for our program participants:
John Rich—Chaplain at St. Clair Corrections
Fr. Ernesto Obregon—Greek Orthodox Priest and Chaplain at Grandview Medical Center
Sgt. Major, Ret, Rev Jerry McClain—Pastor
Willie Holmes, Ret. Financial Officer, Long time Prison Fellowship Volunteer
Allan “Thunder” Scott, Thunderheart Ministries, Bikers for Christ, Human Resources Specialist

With Phase I soon in the record books, we are focusing our attention on getting assessments and other data ready to be compiled and to see what conclusions can be drawn from our initial group of Phase I Forward to Freedom. John's attention will be devoted to pulling together and assessing the instructional program and whatever data and observations may be used to gain insights for a repeat of Phase I and suggestions for Phase 2. We are thinking a second Phase I group should begin just after Labor Day. Phase 2 involves providing them with a job and helping them navigate the work world as they continue with some coursework and counseling. One thing that CCM will be implemented in Phase 2 is a Literacy program to enable our participants to improve their reading and comprehension, particularly as it applies to employment and Bible study. I will be helping with the Literacy Program and look forward to helping our participants in that way as well as others, as need arises.

Cadence Call Ministries has also been approached to help develop a program for Veterans that is similar to the one we developed for Forward To Freedom. Two residences have been purchased in Tuscaloosa to house up to 20 men and 7-9 women who will be Veterans in need of housing, trauma and addiction counseling, and/or transition navigation as they prepare to reenter the world of civilians and the normal responsibilities that involves. We will keep you posted on how this is progressing and what our part in it will be.

Personally and medically John and I are seeing light at the end of the tunnel. John is transitioning to in-home (Peritoneal) dialysis. This is our first week of in-home dialysis, so we should no longer need to go in to Veterans Administration Hospital for hemodialysis three days a week. He will be able to have dialysis at home and he and I have been trained, so no medical personnel will be needed. He will be able to dialyze while he sleeps as well as while he does other things during the evenings. It also will mean he will have more energy and will be able to concentrate better on ministry without the distraction of scheduling around his physical requirements or the draining effects of hemodialysis. Please pray for us during this transition and for wisdom as we utilize time and attention in a new way--a more normal way.

On June 23 we had our first Board meeting for Cadence Call Ministries since our reorganization. We are so thankful to Dr. Doug Heise for his many contributions to the development of our board and for agreeing to become the President of the Board. We are thankful to those in attendance for your presence, interest and input. We are looking forward to working with each of the wonderful individuals on the board to make Cadence Call Ministries the best it can be, to fulfill our goal of helping others who have experienced trauma, addiction and life difficulties and lead them toward a knowledge of Jesus Christ, His salvation, and the benefits of following Biblical principles in their lives.

We appreciate all of you who pray for us, volunteer for us or support us in any way. We would love to hear from you and would be pleased to let you know how you might personally benefit our work, if you have an interest in doing so. Please continue to pray for us and for each individual we serve, that Christ will be honored and lives will be changed.

It is amazing to see the transition taking place in the lives of the men we serve in our ministry. People transitioning from jail/prison to the “free world” who come with nothing but the clothes on their backs but are dragging a lot of baggage, hurts and addictions. Their stories would put you on the floor crying. They have a lot to unlearn and a lot to learn. Moving them from suspicion to trust is a monumental task: trust for us and trust in a God and Savior they have wanted to blame rather than embrace. They are learning and beginning to trust. Two of them will be baptized this Sunday and John and I will be there standing with them and standing in as “adoptive” parents for at least one. Praise God. Please continue to pray for our guys as our intense time of teaching and counseling with them ends in a month and they step out more into the world and less under our guidance and care. Pray as we contemplate starting with a new group in the near future…for judges that will trust them into our care and program, for our amazing facilitators and mentors, for the young men God will trust us with, and for the financial backing needed to move forward and expand. If you would like to contribute go to PayPal to Cadence Call Ministries. If you would like to help in any other way please post here or through messenger.

Please read this to see what we are up to at our ministry. We are Cadence Call Ministries and are the instruction, biblical counseling and chaplaincy arm of his project organized by Forward to Freedom. Cadence Call Ministries Executive Director, Chaplain John Murphy, has planned and is implementing this part of the program. We are loving seeing the change in the lives, thinking, behavior and countenance of the participants. The facilitators the Lord has led us to are second to none and the curriculum has a very high success rate as indicated by evidence based data. I’m (Anita Dutton Murphy) loving the smiles and hugs from the participants when I am able to see them at church and on the program site. Please pray for our success in becoming a part of the solution to a great cultural problem. Please give so we can continue and expand our work. Praise be to God for His guidance in setting up and implementing this wonderful program.

Relate Well Singles Ministry is an arm of Cadence Call Ministries that is designed to provide a safe and comfortable place for area single adults to meet weekly for fellowship, food and some great teaching.

Last week we changed our focus and had a very intimate period of sharing and prayer during the entire meeting time. Several or our members are in a difficult situation or have ongoing difficulties and we wanted to just spend some time with for each other. It was a very sweet time. Please continue to pray for your friends at Relate Well.

This Monday evening, I will be teaching/sharing on the topic I had planned for last week, which has to do with new beginnings, resolutions and follow through (most of us have some difficulty with this). I look forward to sharing the insights I have discovered that are helpful.

Beginning either the 20th or 27th, depending on availability of needed materials, Ron Nelson will be leading us in a 4-6 week study of "The Church, the Culture and Personal Application." We will look at how the Book of Revelation speaks on the Church and what it says to us corporately and personally today. We are the church and what happens in the church is applicable to us as individuals as well.

Address: 3064 Lorna Road, Hoover, AL (Disciples Fellowship, behind Shipley Donuts)
Time: 5:30 pm--Doors Open for Fellowship and set up or supper
6:00 pm--COVERED DISH SUPPER
6:30 pm--Teaching Time--New Beginnings

We look forward to seeing you all tonight and enjoying food, fellowship and getting a great start on 2020.

Blessings!
