Wisdom & Wealth

Reflection:
I have lived long enough to have experienced having a little and having a lot. I’ve also encountered the miracle of God’s provision where regardless of my condition - neither I nor my family went lacking.

What’s interesting, however, is that for me money has never been the main thing. I watched my dad stalk money and never seem to ever have enough - and early on I made a decision to do otherwise. Thank God for grace!

So then how I live and treat others - the quality of my life - would not be defined by a desire for coins in my pocket.

And guess what has happened?

God has granted me access and opportunities that I could not have imagined. God has provided for me and my family - God has supplied our needs and allowed us to bless others.

Please understand I’m not bragging, I’m testifying.

I’m not offering some code to wealth and riches - that would defeat the point of this message.

I’m just reminding us that God is good and faithful and God honors our faithfulness.

Scripture(s):
A faithful man will abound with blessings, but whoever hastens to be rich will not go unpunished.
Proverbs 28:20

But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
Matthew 6:33

Prayer:
Two things I ask of you; deny them not to me before I die:
8 Remove far from me falsehood and lying; give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with the food that is needful for me, 9 lest I be full and deny you and say, “Who is the Lord?” or lest I be poor and steal and profane the name of my God. Proverbs 30:7-9

Wisdom and Words

Reflection:
While many of us are familiar with the old adage that says, ‘sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me,’ most of us can readily admit that these words are the most untrue.

Our words are the most powerful and the most destructive things we possess. Words create and destroy, build and tear down. Our words may give life and healing or they may be death-dealing. Words can foster peace or incite violence.

It’s interesting how we spend our first few years developing and celebrating our ability to speak and then we must spend the rest of our lives aiming to control what we say. Life and death are indeed in the power of our tongues. (Proverbs 18:21)

Our words not only have the ability to impact others, and frame our external reality, but our words also reveal our thoughts and expose what’s in our hearts.

Such awesome power lies in our words - it behooves us to seek and apply wisdom when we open our mouths.

Scripture(s):

A gentle tongue is a tree of life, but perverseness in it breaks the spirit.
Proverbs 15:4

Even fools who keep silent are considered wise; when they close their lips, they are deemed intelligent.
Proverbs 17:28

To watch over your mouth and tongue is to keep out of trouble.

Prayer:

Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.

Wisdom & Love?

Reflection:
If knowledge puffs up but love builds up (1 Cor. 8:1), I am struck by a question.

Why do knowledge and love exist in such tension?

I think it is because of the tendency we have to become arrogant, to stop listening, to become judgmental, and hypercritical when we think we know something or someone. You know - to become a know-it-all.

Knowledge alone can make us hard on ourselves, hard on others, and hard to get along with.

To possess knowledge but lack virtue - is to lack patience, resilience, godliness, and love. But wisdom tempers our knowledge, shows us how to use it, and guards us against pride.

But don’t take my word for it!

Scripture:
For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love.
2 Peter 1:5-7

Prayer:
Lord as I possess knowledge, grant me wisdom that broadens me. Grant me insight that makes me more sensitive and considerate. Grant me a tenderness that makes me more understanding and compassionate. LORD, as I learn more of You, guard me against self-righteousness. Grant me the ability to see myself more clearly so that I can love others well. In Jesus’ Name.
Amen.

Wisdom & Contentment

There is a type of wisdom that comes from experience but even for the most seasoned among - this type of wisdom must be tempered by the word of God.

God’s character is consistent with what God has spoken, and Christ is God’s expression of God’s self. So that when we are wondering how it is we should think, speak, or move through the world, we have an example to follow.

Oh, that we would take Christ seriously! We could know what it is to be loved truly and how we might love one another more faithfully.

Are you struggling today with a difficult decision? Do you find yourself wrestling with how to respond to difficult people? Are you facing what appears to be an insurmountable obstacle?

God has a word for us.

There is a peace that comes when we surrender to godly wisdom. There is a path to healing and joy that is discernible when we incline our ears to listen to the voice of the Spirit. There is a contentment that cannot be achieved by any other noble pursuit.

This contentment is beyond our intellect and often contrary to any worldly knowledge we might possess. This contentment is the prize that is the culmination of our curiosity when it is directed towards the Creator.

But don’t take my word for it. Ask God!

Scripture:
If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.
James 1:5

The wisdom of God produces godliness within us and promises contentment with great gain! (1 Timothy 6:6)

Prayer:
In a world full of information, misinformation, and disinformation, LORD tune my ears to discern your voice! Discipline me to seek your wisdom above all else and in all things. In Jesus’ name.
