Joyous Feastday! It's Lazarus Saturday in the Orthodox Church, and we celebrate the Lord's raising of Lazarus "the four days dead" leading into the Lord's triumphal entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. Our community is preparing for the holy days ahead with our annual Lazarus Saturday work day -- always a fun day to work together and get to know one another better as we get the grounds and buildings ready for Palm Sunday, Holy Week, and Holy Pascha. Festive Palm Sunday services begin with Vespers this evening at 5 p.m. Matins will begin at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow, with Divine Liturgy at 10 a.m. Glory to God for all things!

Holy Week is coming up! Here's our graphic schedule, beautifully prepared by Deacon Andrew. Also, this week's Wedesday service has been cancelled. Our next service is Friday evening, our final Presanctified Liturgy, which begins the 11-day marathon of daily services culminating in Pascha and Bright Monday. Glory to God for all things!

In the Fifth Week of Great Lent, we have a different schedule. First, we have the Great Feast of the Annunciation on March 25. There will be Vespers for the Feast on Tuesday, March 24, at 6:30 p.m., with the Divine Liturgy of the Feast on Wednesday, March 25, at 10 a.m. As usual during the Fifth Week of Great Lent, we have the complete Great Canon of St. Andrew on Thursday, March 26, beginning at 6 p.m. On Friday, March 27, we have Matins with the Akathist to the Theotokos beginning at 6 p.m. Glory to God for all things!

The Lenten Spring has come! During this First Week of Great Lent, the Church gives us the penitential guidance of the Great Canon of St. Andrew. We offer a portion of the Great Canon within a Compline service each night Monday through Thursday beginning at 6:30 p.m. Numerous prostrations are appointed during this service for those able to do them. The Great Canon in its entirety is offered in Fifth Week of Great Lent. Visitors are always welcome at St. Symeon, and you are invited to participate in these services to the extent you wish! Please wear modest attire and comfortable shoes. This Friday we will have our first Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts, also beginning at 6:30 p.m. and followed by a fasting potluck supper. Visitors are welcome at the Presanctified Liturgy, and it is a beautiful service to attend! Only Orthodox Christians who have prepared themselves with prayer, fasting, and recent confession may receive Holy Communion, however. All of these weeknight services are in a peaceful, darkened, candlelit church. PLEASE PARDON OUR PROGRESS, as we have scaffolding up in the Narthex for iconography installation. (You will simply walk through it; it does not block access.)

Yesterday's homily was delivered by our seminarian, Sdn. Andrew Ritchey. He gave us homework! He assigned us to read the hymns appointed to be sung from now through December 24, meditate on them, and let that be a form of prayer as we prepare for the great feast of the Nativity of Our Lord. Here's a link so you can easily find the hymns (just scroll to today's hymns):

The texts of the propers sung at Vespers (stichera on "Lord I call," Litya, Aposticha, Troparia and Kontakia that change daily according to either the day of the week or particular day of the month). Texts are "pointed" to be sung according to the tonal patterns of the Common Chant (L'vov-Bakhmetev....
