Church of the Reconciler

Church of the Reconciler Our mission is to restore people to loving relationships with themselves, with their community, and with God.

We're a United Methodist Mission Church whose congregation is composed primarily of those who are unhoused, transient, or struggling with the consequences of poverty. We have a wonderful and caring staff and host many volunteers from partner churches, amazing organizations, and individuals.

• Our service is at 9:30am every Sunday Morning
• Bible Study is open to the public every Monday and Wedne

sday at 10:00am in the sanctuary.
• Community Table is a fun and intentional spiritual time that can be anything from music to prayer to games; it's every Tuesday at 10:00am
• Sacred Musing is our Brew Pub Study Group that meets every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month. Come hang out and let's chat and learn!
• Bring us your #5 plastic so we can recycle it in our shop! We usually have sack lunches or meals to give to those in need. We would be overjoyed if you'd consider joining us as a volunteer or giving to our cause of helping the unhoused and eliminating homelessness from Birmingham.

John is a long time and very supportive member of our church. He is making a big change for himself and for the community today. The van behind him in these photos is where he lived for about 8 years. While he called this van at the corner of the church home, he had an enclosed space to sleep and keep belongings. Sometimes it was a little chaotic trying to sleep on a busy street. Many times he was a help to others, listening to people who needed someone to talk to, giving water to the thirsty, and administering Narcan to people who had overdosed. John recently moved into transitional housing at the new Micro Shelters, operated by Faith Chapel, with support from the City of Birmingham. John is very excited about the new changes in his life, including selling his old home for parts. This van belonged to his mother, who has since passed away. We pray that John's mom and the positive memories of this van will always be with him. We're so grateful that John still calls Church of the Reconciler his church home. You're welcome here, too! descriptions
1) John smiles at the back of his white van. The back windows are covered with reflective foil. John wears his classic uniform: jeans, a t-shirt, and suspenders. In the background is the red brick church building, with the blue dove and key logo and "Church of the Reconciler" at the top right.
2) Standing by the van, Glen (left) gives a peace sign beside John (middle) and Pastor Dylan (right)
3) Pastor Sarah (left) stands with John by the van. Pastors Sarah and Dylan prayed with John to give thanks for the van and all it has done for him and the church.

We enjoyed seeing our kids make empty tombs (and other creative masterpieces) from modeling clay during worship on Easter morning! In our service we value children and adults being together and seeing Jesus in one another, so we have a kids’ table with quiet-ish learning activities and also welcome them into several leadership roles of the service, like lighting candles, praying, and playing music.

My God, my God, why have you left me all alone?
Why are you so far from saving me?
So far from my anguished groans.
My God, I cry out during the day
… Even at night, I don’t stop.
You are the holy one, enthroned?
Our ancestors trusted you
… and they weren’t ashamed.
… I was thrown on you from birth.
You’ve been my God since I was in my mother’s womb.
—Psalm 22:1-5, 10
On Thursday, April 2 at 12:00 noon, our Holy Thursday service will include a monologue and dance of Psalm 22 by Jonathan Skaggs and our senior pastor Rev. Sarah Smoot. Psalm 22 has many connections with Jesus’s crucifixion, most famously the opening line, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” Sarah and Jonathan’s performance explores how Jesus’ suffering connects God with those who suffer and doubt today.
Worship will be preceded by a fellowship lunch at 11:00 am.
You are welcome here.

We thank God for Tammie. Tammie has been a long time member of Church of the Reconciler and the community of people living without homes in Birmingham. Folks from all around town knew and loved Tammie, especially here and at
But most of all Tammie loved us. She was a bright, warm, and loving person. She loved crochet, and she always wanted ice to chew. She loved being helpful and always offered others encouragement when she participated in the church’s support group. We thank God for Tammie’s life and strive to continue showing the love that she shared with others here. We love you, Tammie!

Last week Lorenzo “Lo” joined as a member of the Church of the Reconciler. Lorenzo knew founding pastor Rev. Lawton Higgs Sr. and participated in the church’s ministry in its first building on 4th Ave. N. So we’re very touched that he chose this season of the church’s life to officially make his membership vows to:

Support the church with your prayers, your presence, your gifts, your service, and your witness.

Lo has been serving by leading prayer circle and checking community mail in our front office. He also shares his witness about Church of the Reconciler everywhere he goes. We are so thankful he is a part of our ministry!

In welcoming a new member, the rest of the congregation also “gives thanks for all God has already given you,” “welcomes you in Christian love” and vows to “pray for you and support you”

Is it time for you to join the church’s covenant? We’d love to talk with you about that!

Welcome, Lorenzo.

Welcome, Friends.

Welcome, Strangers.

You are loved here.
