Blessed Mother's Day!
May Theme: Promised...renewal - help - revelation - life

The sermon theme for May will focus on the many promises concerning the Holy Spirit. The Spirit brings renewal, help, revelation, and life.

The deepest mystery of the early church lies in the very presence of the risen Christ Himself, who makes His dwelling in each person's heart and reveals the power of His presence in the midst of His church... at the first Pentecost, from the One who had died and risen again, the life of the Spirit broke in as the coming of the kingdom.

What did the first believers experience? They experienced the kingdom of God - the revolution of all things and the revaluation of all values. God became the highest value; He reigned and revealed Himself... When the Spirit was given by the Risen One... the disciples were able to become a life-sharing community, and only then did their love overflow... the Spirit drew the early Christians to one another. Together they felt compelled to live the life of Jesus, and together, in complete community, they experienced the powers of the future. (Eberhard Arnold, German theologian, 1883-1935).

This is the work of the Spirit.

Let us allow these themes to bring us to the festive divine service of Pentecost, which will be webcast from our Chief Apostle in South Africa.

May 14 - "And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you." - John 14:16-17

April Theme: Go...Teaching Them...

The message of the first apostles (the apostle's doctrine) was their eye-witness account of Jesus' life, death, and resurrection; the events that we are now approaching in Holy Week.

After Jesus Christ rose from the dead, He appeared to many of His disciples, opening the Scriptures, comforting, and encouraging them.

Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had appointed for them. When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some doubted. And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, 'All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." (Matthew 28:16-20)

Before Jesus ascended into heaven, He commissioned His disciples to 'Go; make disciples [by] baptizing; and teaching them. This account frames our sermon theme for the month of April.

We see from the verses above that some doubted. But for those who believed, their lives were transformed by their encounter with the Risen One, and they committed their lives to going, teaching, professing, and making disciples.

Following are the Bible verses for last week's reflection and this Sunday's Divine Service:
April 2 - 'Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your King is coming, sitting on a donkey's c**t.' His disciples did not understand these things at first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written about Him and that they had done these things to Him." - John 12:15-16; Bible reading: Luke 19:28-40
April 7 - "For the love of Christ compels us, because we judge thus; that if One died for all, then all died; and He died for all, that those who live should love no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again." - 2 Corinthians 5:14-15: Bible reading: Luke 23:13-25
April 9 - "I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you. A little while longer and the world will see Me no more, but you will see Me. Because I live, you will live also." - John 14:18-19; Bible reading: Luke 24:1-12
