☀️ Monday, September 7 | Labor Day Monday

Today is Labor Day — a day built around rest, but for a lot of you it does not feel restful.

There is laundry to catch up on. A house to reset before the week starts. Kids to get ready for school tomorrow. A holiday meant to honor work, often spent doing more of it — the irony is not lost on anyone who has tried to actually relax on a Monday off.

So let us reframe the day for a second.

Work is not a curse. It was part of the original design, before sin entered the world — God gave Adam a garden to tend in Eden itself. It is one of the ways we reflect a God who is Himself a worker, a builder, a maker of things.

"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters." — Colossians 3:23

Whatever you are doing today — even the laundry, even the errands, even the unglamorous reset before the week begins — you can do it as an offering instead of an obligation.

That does not make the to-do list shorter. It makes it holier. 🙏

☀️ Sunday, September 6 | The First Sunday of September

Good morning, Birchwood! ☀️

It is the first Sunday of September and New Liberty Baptist Church is open.

Summer is behind us now. The rhythms are shifting — school schedules, work schedules, the whole shape of ordinary life resetting into something new. And in the middle of all that shifting, we want to offer you one thing that does not change.

This room. This family. This God.

Whatever September holds — and none of us know exactly what that is yet — you are not walking into it without a place to land. A community that will pray for you specifically when it gets hard. A God who has already walked every step of the year you have not lived yet.

"I am the Lord your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you." — Isaiah 41:13

Takes hold of your hand. Not watching from a distance — taking hold, present tense, right now, on this first Sunday of a new season.

Come in and let Him take hold of yours. 🙏

🌸 Saturday, September 5 | What If You Are Wrong About God

What if the version of God you are angry at does not actually exist?

A lot of people who have walked away from faith are not walking away from the God of Scripture. They are walking away from a caricature — a cosmic scorekeeper, a distant judge, a rule-enforcer who is perpetually disappointed and impossible to please. And if that is the God someone was taught to believe in, walking away from Him makes complete sense. We would too.

But that is not who He is.

He is the one who wept at a friend's tomb before raising him from the dead — grief and power held together, not one canceling out the other. He is the one who let a woman caught in shame wash His feet with her tears while the religious people around Him recoiled. He is the one who, dying, asked His Father to forgive the very people killing Him.

"For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son." — John 3:16

Loved the world. Not judged it. Not tolerated it. Loved it — enough to do something about it that cost Him everything.

If the God you walked away from was smaller than that — we understand. But we would love the chance to introduce you to the real one.

🌱 Friday, September 4 | The Cost of Comparison

Somebody you know is doing something you wish you were doing.

The promotion. The marriage. The house. The kids who seem easier than yours. The body, the vacation, the peace they seem to have that you cannot locate anywhere in your own life. And if you are honest, some part of you has spent real time this week measuring your life against theirs and coming up short.

That comparison is costing you something you may not have noticed yet.

It is costing you the ability to actually receive what God has given you — because you are too busy resenting what He gave someone else. Gratitude and comparison cannot occupy the same space in a heart at the same time.

"A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones." — Proverbs 14:30

Envy rots the bones. That is not poetic exaggeration — it is a real, physical, corrosive description of what comparison does to a person over time. It does not just steal your joy. It eats at you from the inside.

Put down what you are carrying that was never yours to carry. Their life is theirs. Yours is yours. Go live it fully. 🙏

📖 Thursday, September 3 | Scripture Spotlight

"Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up." — Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

Pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.

That is a striking thing for Scripture to say. Not a gentle suggestion that community is nice to have. A warning — pity the person who is doing life alone, because falling is not a matter of if but when, and the people around you are not optional extras to your faith. They are part of the design.

We live in a culture that prizes independence like it is the highest virtue. Handle it yourself. Do not be a burden. Figure it out on your own. And somewhere in absorbing that message, a lot of us have quietly convinced ourselves that needing other people is a weakness to overcome rather than a truth to embrace.

Scripture strongly disagrees.

You were never meant to fall alone, get back up alone, or carry the weight of your life without anyone close enough to notice when you are struggling. That is not independence. That is isolation wearing independence as a disguise.

Who is close enough to catch you if you fell today? If the honest answer is nobody — that is worth addressing before you need them. 🙏

🙏 Wednesday, September 2 | Midweek Prayer

Wednesday.

Today we want to pray specifically for the caregivers.

The ones taking care of an aging parent while also raising their own kids. The ones managing a spouse's illness quietly, without complaint, because someone has to hold things together. The ones who show up every day for someone who may never be able to thank them for it — running on a kind of exhaustion that does not show up on the outside.

You rarely get asked how you are doing. Everyone asks about the person you are caring for.

So we are asking today. How are you?

"Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you." — 1 Peter 5:7

He cares for you. Not just for the person you are caring for — for you, specifically, in the exhaustion, in the grief that has nowhere to go, in the resentment you feel guilty for even having.

You are allowed to need care too.

🌿 Tuesday, September 1 | When God Says No

Let us talk about the prayers that did not get answered the way you wanted.

Not the ones that are still pending — the ones that are closed. The door that stayed shut. The relationship that did not get restored. The outcome you begged God for that simply did not happen, no matter how much faith you tried to muster.

We do not talk about those enough in church.

We are quick to celebrate the answered prayer, the miraculous turnaround, the testimony with a clean resolution. We are much slower to sit with the ones that ended in no — because they are harder to explain and harder to reconcile with a God we believe is good.

But a no from God is not evidence of His absence. Sometimes it is the clearest sign of His involvement.

"My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." — 2 Corinthians 12:9

Paul asked three times for something to be removed. God said no three times. And in the no, Paul found something he would not have found in the yes — a dependence on grace that a resolved problem never would have taught him.

Your no might be teaching you the same thing right now. 🙏

☀️ Monday, August 31 | The Discipline Nobody Applauds

There is a kind of faithfulness that never makes it into a testimony.

Nobody stands up on a Sunday morning and says, "Let me tell you about the time I kept my temper in check during a frustrating conversation." Those moments do not make it into the highlight reel. They happen, they pass, and nobody but God ever knows they occurred.

That is exactly why they matter so much.

The Christian life is built less in the dramatic moments and more in the thousands of small, unglamorous choices nobody will ever applaud. The patience you did not have to show. The apology you did not have to offer first. The grudge you decided not to hold one more day.

"Whoever is faithful in very little is also faithful in much." — Luke 16:10

Very little. Not the mission trip or the public act of service. The tiny, invisible moment that only you and God will ever know about.

That is where character gets built. 🙏

☀️ Sunday, August 30 | The Last Sunday of August

Good morning, Birchwood! ☀️

It is the last Sunday of August — and we are spending it exactly the way we spend every Sunday. Doors open. People gathering. A God who shows up in the middle of ordinary people doing an ordinary thing and makes something extraordinary out of it.

We want to say something before the service starts this morning.

This summer was not wasted. Not the parts that felt productive and not the ones that felt like treading water. Not the Sundays you were here or the ones you were not. Not the prayers that got answered and not the ones still waiting. None of it.

God was in all of it — working quietly and persistently toward something good that you may not fully see yet but that is real and coming.

Come in today and bring the whole summer with you. The gratitude and the grief and the questions and the half-answered prayers.

“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” — Psalm 23:6

All the days. The summer ones included.
