"There are multiple things that I never expected as a minister's wife. For example, a church our size requires 24 hour "on-duty" status, which we are happy to provide. With the size of the "flock/congregation", the more time that is required to meet the needs and requests of the family of God. It is hard for me sometimes to balance family time with church and District requirements/requests and to keep a right perspective with what I also want for my family.
I learned very quickly once a minister's wife that friends are few and far between. Confidentiality is a major factor and if a minister's wife is faithful to her husband's role and the people in the church, she cannot and should not be "sharing" information, even with another minister's wife. Some things that are known cannot be shared or even remotely referenced in ordinary conversations. My husband is my confidant and I cannot confide in others. The Lord taught me a lesson one time when I was in my "whining mode" about lack of friends. He impressed upon me that if I desired to soar with eagles, I cannot peck around with all the other chickens! Tough lesson but it put me on track!
I have picked out role models of Godly ministers' wives and have tried to assimilate some of their attributes. I also have watched others and thought I NEVER want to follow their lead. I like to read and have many books that I glean information from. Someone told me that if you get one or two good/great thoughts from a book, your money is NOT wasted. I admit I have not read all my books but I do go through and highlight important information and always plan to get back to finish the book. My bible reading has prompted me to be continuous with morning devotions with the Bible and two or three other devotional books. I am a journalist so I have two journals that I keep with me when doing my devotions and write down thoughts, etc. that have ministered to me and hopefully, will be used for others when the times arise."
