Year of the Holy Spirit — Week 17 Reflection

The Mark of the Christian

The sign that we have "passed from death into life" is our love for one another. As children of God, we are called to move away from the spirit of division. Our status requires us to keep our "severities" for ourselves and to be gentle and equitable with others. By practicing kindness and goodwill in our words and thoughts, we manifest the glory of our divine adoption to the world. When we choose patience over conflict, we demonstrate that the Spirit is truly at work within us, reconciling all things through the power of love and divine peace.

St. Padre Pio: "The Holy Spirit is the pilot of our soul’s ship."

Year of the Holy Spirit — Week 16 Reflection

Adopted by Grace

Through the Holy Spirit, we have received the "spirit of adoption," which allows us to cry out, "Abba, Father." This relationship is not merely a title; it is a reality achieved through the "infusion" of grace into our souls. By this grace, we are conformed to the image of Jesus Christ. We should live with a constant awareness of this divine dignity, recognizing that we are "heirs together of the Kingdom of God." This identity as a child of God changes how we view ourselves and others, calling us to a life of holiness and profound gratitude.

St. Josemaría Escrivá: "Get to know the Holy Spirit, the Great Unknown; He is the one who must sanctify you."

Year of the Holy Spirit — Week 15 Reflection

Love Your Neighbor

We cannot claim to love the God we cannot see if we do not love the neighbor we can see. If we are "indulgent" toward our own faults but "sharp and unjust" toward others, our charity is lacking. To live as children of the Great King, we must honor the dignity of our neighbors. Let us harbor no thoughts that are not compassionate and tender, even toward those who are "ungrateful or repulsive." True charity requires us to set aside our judgments and serve others with the same selfless love that Christ has shown to each of us.

St. Bonaventure: "The Holy Spirit is the finger of God’s right hand, pointing the way to heaven."

Year of the Holy Spirit — Week 14 Reflection

Charity and the Holy Spirit

Charity is "poured forth in our hearts by the Holy Spirit." It is the highest of the theological virtues and the very soul of the Church's unity. Without charity, all other gifts and virtues are incomplete. When the Holy Spirit dwells in us, He transforms our natural affections into a supernatural charity that enables us to love our neighbors with the same heart that we desire our neighbors to bear toward us. This divine love expands our capacity for compassion, allowing us to see the image of God in every person we encounter throughout our daily lives.

St. Jane de Chantal: "Listen to the Holy Spirit; He speaks in the silence of the heart."

Year of the Holy Spirit — Week 13 Reflection

The Love of Friendship

Charity is defined as the "love of friendship" with God. While we may first love God for our own sake—which is the love of hope—charity elevates our hearts to love God for His own sake. It is the most perfect and unselfish form of love, where we desire "all good and all glory" for God because of His infinite perfections. This "love of friendship" constitutes the deep confidence and union that the saints share with their Creator. When we love God this way, our lives are transformed into an ongoing conversation of devotion and joyful sacrifice.

St. Philip Neri: "The Holy Spirit is the joy that fills the heart of the believer."
