105 years later, we still remember what was taken from Black Wall Street.

The Tulsa Race Massacre wasn’t just an attack on a neighborhood. It was an attack on Black success, Black wealth, and a thriving community that built for itself despite every barrier placed in its way.

Today, we honor the lives lost, the stories too often left out of textbooks, and the legacy of Greenwood that still lives on. Never forgotten.

While Florida has mandated African American history education for 30 years, only 12 districts actually do it well. The result? Families are taking matters into their own hands, sending their children to weekend programs at places like the Spady Cultural Heritage Museum, churches, and community centers that teach comprehensive Black history their public schools won't provide.

These Saturday programs don't shy away from difficult topics. Students learn about South Florida's Caribbean roots, local histories, and even violent chapters like lynchings—all presented in age-appropriate but honest ways. Community elders and museum educators step in where the state education system falls short, ensuring kids understand the full scope of African American contributions and experiences that shaped their communities.

These students aren't giving up their weekends. They're taking ownership of their education and reclaiming their history. When institutions fail to honor their own mandates, communities build their own classrooms anyway. Smart students and families know you can't erase history, and they're proving that Black history is American history worth learning properly.
