April 5th: Sauron is defeated. His armies have been vanquished. The ring is destroyed. The skies open up and light begins to shine away the darkness. Our hobbits find a safe rock away from the lava and fire just outside the mountain. They begin to breathe in the fresh air and Frodo feels a light enter into him. The weight of the ring no longer holds him back. The quest is complete! New life! Middle Earth is saved, and all the peoples of the land can now share in the newness of life. Frodo and Sam are rescued by the eagles, and a great celebration is had by all in Gondor. It is a joyous day indeed! Jesus has conquered death! We are an Easter people! This has been quite a journey.
We have witnessed many things along the way. Betrayal, grief, joy, friendship, hardship, and ultimately redemption in resurrection.
This journey with the Fellowship has hopefully opened your eyes to the ways journeys can change oneself. We can either fall to the ways of the world and be overcome by those who mean to cause harm or separate us. Or, we can band together and do something for the greater good. We can love our neighbor, make difficult decisions, stand firm in our faith, and put our hope and trust in God.
Darkness has passed. The Ring is destroyed. Mordor falls. But the journey to this moment has been long, harrowing, and costly. Frodo and Sam are battered, exhausted, and near despair. Alone, they could not have survived.
And then, salvation comes from above. The great Eagles swoop down, lifting Frodo and Sam out of danger. They are carried over the ruins, over the shadow, into sunlight. This is not merely escape — it is resurrection. What seemed impossible, lost, and dead is now alive. What looked like despair is now hope. Lent’s shadow gives way to Easter’s light.
Meanwhile, in Minas Tirith, Aragorn is crowned king. Healing, restoration, and justice flow through the land. Prophecies long whispered are fulfilled. The rightful King reigns, not as a conqueror of people, but as a healer, a servant, a guide toward life and hope. The world is renewed. The faithful endure. The small, the humble, the overlooked — Frodo, Sam, Merry, Pippin — have played roles in salvation that seemed impossible. Evil has been overturned not by brute power, but by courage, endurance, love, and sacrifice.
This is the pattern of Easter:
• The lowly are exalted.
• Hope is restored where all seemed lost.
• Life triumphs through sacrifice.
• God’s work is unseen, intricate, and ultimately victorious.
Frodo and Sam’s rescue reminds us that God’s deliverance often comes in unexpected ways. Aragorn’s coronation reminds us that God’s kingdom is realized through service, mercy, and faithful leadership. Together, they point to the eternal truth: resurrection transforms the world, restores hearts, and fulfills God’s promises.
Today is a celebration of hope restored. Shadows have passed. Light has returned. Life has overcome despair.
Where have I seen hope emerge from despair in my own life? How is God calling me to participate in restoration and renewal? What “resurrection” moments — healing, reconciliation, deliverance — am I invited to witness or share this Easter?
Prayer: Risen Lord, You have lifted us from shadow into light. You have restored hope where despair seemed certain. May I walk in Your resurrection power, Bearing courage, love, and faithfulness to a world in need.
Amen.
