You Cannot Be Passive When Introduced To Jesus

In Luke 9:7-36 we read how Jesus responds when the 12 apostles that He sent out return. He takes them aside privately to debrief, and then the crowds find Him. They want to hear from Him again, and Jesus receives them. He doesn’t resist them; He teaches them about the Kingdom of God and heals all who had need of healing. He even miraculously heals their hunger by providing a miraculous supply of food. From there, we see Jesus once again praying with His disciples and in the midst of prayer, He asks the most important question than any of us will ever be asked; “Who do you say that I am?” 5000 people heard the teaching of Christ, watched as He healed people, and were even fed miraculously by Him but not one of them had the right answer to that question. Only Peter responded with, “You are the Christ of God.” From there, Jesus talks about what it means to follow Him and eventually He invites some of His closest friends onto a mountain where He is transfigured. The full glory of God is revealed as the trinity appears in a tangible way to those who were invited to see. In that moment, Christ is joined by two others; Elijah and Moses. There is a great spiritual truth that is being revealed by the inclusion of those two on the mount of transfiguration. It’s a beautiful truth that the presence of Christ will always bring about a perfect and complete redemption for those who wait on Him.

Faith fights both to get to and to bring forth life. At least that’s what we read about in Luke 8:40-9:6. In this account, Jesus returns from the other side of the Sea of Galalee to a crowd that has been waiting for Him to arrive. As soon as they welcome Him, a ruler of the synagogue begs Jesus to come with him because he knows that only Jesus can heal his only daughter. Along the way Jesus encounters a woman who has been dealing with her own medical issue for 12 years. Her faith causes her to fight her way through the crowd to reach her healer, and when she touches Him she is immediately healed. Her faith fought to get to Jesus.

The delay seems to have cost the first man his daughter’s like because as they were stopped word arrives that the daughter has died. Jesus responds with an important word of encouragement for the father and for you and I today. “Do not be afraid; only believe and she will be made well.” Jesus then fights His way through the crowd to the man’s house. He fights His way through the mourners who do not have the faith tp believe that He can raise the girl. He fights his way through the ridicule He receives when He promises that this is not the end. Jesus fights His way to the little girl because He know that only He can raise her back to life. Faith fights to both gain and give for life.
